“It was still a cool costume,” she muttered glumly.

Now he felt bad for giving her a hard time. He gave her a repentant look. “I’m teasing you. It was a very cool costume. You had me beat by a million.”

She half-smiled but didn’t respond.

They watched the movie, laughing together at their favorite moments and discussing weird bits of trivia they had both acquired over the years. When it was over, he asked her to start the next one.

“We can’t just leave Han Solo with the bad guys,” he said.

She narrowed her eyes at him. “Are you sure you don’t just want to see Princess Leia in the gold bikini? You can tell me if that’s the case.”

Dave’s stomach soured a bit.

He’d forgotten about the gold bikini scene.

He rolled his lips inward and debated whether he could tell her the truth. He’d tried to explain it to people before, and no one ever believed him.

But Sabinelistenedto people.

“I’m actually in the minority on the gold bikini,” he started.

She tilted her head and waited.

See?

Listening.

Not scoffing. Not mocking.

Just waiting for more information.

He liked that a lot. So much.

In fact, it was probably her most attractive quality.

Outside of the obvious of course.

“Don’t get me wrong, the gold bikini is hot. But she was a slave. She wasn’t wearing it by choice, and that is waaay less hot. It kind of makes the entire thing gross, if I’m being honest.”

Sabine’s dark eyebrows dipped. “Are you serious?”

Maybe she didn’t get it either.

“I can’t separate the details. They all hit me at the same time. Gold bikini, disgusting bad guy, chained up against her will. The negatives outweigh the hotness, and it just makes me kind of queasy.”

She stared at him. Probably trying to figure out if he was being honest or not.

And that was the thing, hewasbeing honest. But it was too difficult a thing to prove. She would either believe him or not and there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it.

“Freedom is sexy,” he decided to add when she hadn’t responded.

Her smile seemed a little surprised and unsure.

“You really are one of a kind, aren’t you?” she asked.

He swallowed, waiting for her to make fun of him or call him a liar.

But she just hit play and settled back into the couch.
