He squeezed his eyes shut and then rubbed them with a hand. When he opened them again, she was still there. He sat up and looked around the bright loft.

Sabine was nowhere to be seen.

“Kara? Right?” he asked the tall blonde.

She narrowed her eyes at him and then pointed her spoon.

“Last night was fun, huh?” she asked.

“Yeah,” he agreed. “It was awesome.”

“You sleep okay?” she asked into her bowl.

“Oh yeah.” Warmth spread through his chest at the memory of Sabine’s soft body under his. He’d slept like a damn baby.

He couldn’t remember the last time he’d slept that well.

Like he didn’t have a care in the world.

She nodded and her bright smile evaporated into a threatening scowl. “I don’t know what your plan here is, but Sabine is the greatest human on earth. If you hurt her, I’ll haunt your dreams. You’ll never know peace again.”

She scooped another spoonful into her mouth and smiled again but with dead eyes.

A chill raced down his spine.

“Hey, you’re awake!” Sabine came out of the bathroom. She glanced between Kara and Dave. “What’s going on?”

Kara shrugged and turned away from Dave, going back to the dining room.

Dave got to his feet. “What time is it?” he asked, picking up his phone. “Oh, it’s late. I should go.”

He actually had no idea what time it was. Yes, he’d looked at his phone, but all he saw were several missed texts from Max and he panicked.

“Do you want food before you go?” Sabine asked, her hazel eyes bright.

Her braid had come mostly undone. Soft strands framed her face, her clothes were rumpled, and her face was fresh and rested.

Wow.

Just.

Wow.

“I think I’ll just use your bathroom and then take off, if that’s okay.” He made his way around the sofa and went down the short hall.

He did his business and washed his hands. As he was drying his hands on the pink towel, he noticed the butterfly wallpaper.

Huh.

He’d been in the bathroom a few times the night before but he hadn’t been paying attention.

One wall was covered in butterfly wallpaper. The towels were matching light pink. The bathmat was butterfly shaped.

Next thing he knew he was pulling aside the pink and yellow shower curtain and smelling Sabine’s shampoo.

Yep, that was it. That was the scent that had tangled into his dreams all night.

Sonofabitch, she smelled good.
