“How did Halloween go?” Shawn asked.

Sabine broke her eye contact with Dave and went to the table to set her stuff down. “It was a really fun night.” She pulled out a chair and sat down. “At least,Ihad fun,” she amended.

“I had fun,” Dave declared. “I had so much fun that I slept most of the weekend to recover.” He pulled out the chair across from Sabine and sat down.

“It’s true,” Max confirmed. “I can vouch for that.”

“Max,” Sabine said as something occurred to her. “What do you do for a living?”

“I’m an entertainment lawyer.”

“Well, that’s awfully convenient,” she pointed out. And then immediately felt like an ass.

Max’s eyes darted from Dave to Sabine and back again. “You haven’t told her?”

Dave shrugged and started to spin the basketball on his finger again. “It didn’t come up.”

That made sense. From what she’d put together, if something didn’t come up organically, he probably would have no reason to ever mention it.

“Okay, so Dave, Leslie and I all made a plan in high school. By that point in our friendship, it was pretty obvious that Dave was going to do something extravagant with his life.”

Dave snorted.

“I wanted to go into law anyway, Leslie was leaning toward communications.”

“Isn’t it hard to work with friends?” Sabine asked even as she realized that she’d be able to work with Kara no problem.

“Working with family is hard,” Max clarified seriously. “So, we all pushed each other to be the best. When one of us shines, all of us shine.” He grinned.

“That’s kinda cool,” she mused out loud. Turning to Dave she asked, “Did you always know that you’d be a superstar?”

His expression flattened and he caught the ball in his hands again. “Still don’t.”

“What do you mean? You know you’re incredibly famous, right?” she asked, teasing him.

He rolled his eyes.

“He has a hard time feeling successful,” Max provided. Dave shot him a scowl. “What? Is it supposed to be a secret because you’re terrible at keeping it.”

Dave barked a laugh at his friend. “You’re not wrong.” He folded his arms around the ball and rested his chin on it as he gazed across the table at Sabine. “I just don’t feel successful, I guess.”

She rested her chin in her hand, elbow propped on the table. His eyes bounced around the room, happy, dark blue, and guarded. They landed on her and gentled.

“What does successful look like to you?” she asked softly.

His expression grew distant and then his gazed sharpened on her again. “You’re doing that thing. I’m not gonna fall for it.”

She jerked her chin back. “What thing?”

“That thing where you look into my soul and get me to start spilling all my thoughts and feelings.” He stood and palmed the basketball while pointing a finger at her with the other hand. “I’m onto you though.”

She chuckled and decided to play along. “Whatever you say, Sunshine Capone. But someday all your secrets will be mine.”

He pursed his lips, his eyes sparkling with amusement. “That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.”

Sabine shook her head and caught the carefully blank expression on Max’s face as he rubbed the back of his neck. Max’s eyes bounced between Dave and Sabine. He dropped his hand and stepped to the doorway.

“Shawn, I have some documents I need to go over with you.” He left the room.
