Kara was nodding. “No, I get that. Sometimes the effort just isn’t worth the outcome.”

“I love cooking. Especially for people who love eating. Being appreciated is my love language.” Sabine took a bite of her food.

Both Kara and Dave smiled brightly at her, and she paused.

Hm. She catalogued that similarity to go over later.

“What are you doing for Thanksgiving?” Kara asked.

Dave thought. “Max and Leslie will be in town. I think Mama Capone might fly in. Max usually makes a turkey with all the fixins. Oh!” His eyes widened and he sat back in his chair. “You guys should come for Thanksgiving!”

A half smile crept up Kara’s face and she exchanged a look with Sabine.

“Well,” Sabine started. She rubbed her hands on her napkin that was draped over her thighs.

“We should do Thanksgiving here,” Kara blurted.

“What?” Sabine frowned at her bestie.

“That’s a better idea than mine because my place doesn’t have the room. I realized that after I said it out loud.”

“Sabine and Max can make a gluten free Thanksgiving. And you and I can drink pink wine,” Kara held her wine glass up and Dave toasted her.

“This holiday is quickly getting away from me,” Sabine said, giving up and going back to her food.

“Would that work for you, dimples?” Dave asked, his voice soft and sweet.

And he called herdimples?

Sabine inhaled and didn’t dare look at Kara. She knew what she’d see there, and she didn’t need that kind of encouragement racing through her pink wine saturated veins.

“That sounds fun. I can’t wait.”

SPACE AND TIME

DAVE

He paused outside the door and listened.

She was inside the loft singing along to… Taylor Swift?

Of course she was.

He waited another second, trying to identify the song.

“Superstar.”

He was not going to read into that. But he did wait until the song was over, just listening to her sing through the door like a weirdo. The alternative was to go in and embrace the fanboy he was by holding up a lighter and swaying back and forth.

She would probably assume he was making fun of her.

He would never.

He rang the bell and she squawked in surprise. He chuckled because he knew she wasn’t expecting him.

The music paused and she opened the door, frown firmly affixed. Her eyes widened when she saw the bundle he’d set on the floor.
