His arms went around her waist, her arms went around his neck, and their nervous energy exploded out of them both in laughter.

“You were amazing!”

“No,youwere amazing!”

They released each other, then hugged again, slapping one another on the back and continuing with their mutual congratulations.

“You’d think you’d been to war and back with the way you’re acting,” Kara said when they’d let go of each other again. “Here,” she handed Sabine a cup of coffee.

“Oh, you’re an angel,” Sabine said, taking the hot cup with one hand and removing the hockey mask with the other. She sipped the hot beverage and the heat traveled down her throat to her belly. “It’s cold out there.” She shivered. “Also, you’re going to want to sanitize that thing. I spit in it.” She made a face. “Like a lot.” She tossed the mask in the corner by the shoes.

“I like it here.” Max was also cradling a cup of coffee, a happy grin on his face. “You two are insane.”

Leslie arrived an hour later and Max put him to work peeling potatoes.

She’d been around Max a few times but hadn’t been able to spend any time with Leslie since that night they all met at Geekeasy.

And for some reason that caught her by complete surprise, she wanted Dave’s friends to like her. They didn’t have to be besties or anything, but it was important that they be able to exist peacefully with one another.

At least that’s what she kept telling herself.

She needn’t have worried.

Leslie and Max fit into Sabine and Kara’s rhythm with ease. Leslie acted like he’d been to the loft a hundred times and Sabine’s apprehension settled.

Especially after Leslie got Kara to confess which Obi-Wan was her favorite.

Their discussion had Sabine thinking about her initial answer a few weeks ago. She wasn’t about to jump up and tell the room this, but she’d changed her answer.

Her favorite Obi-Wan was the one that had spent Halloween with her handing out candy and making her laugh.

Hands down. Best Obi-Wan of them all.

“When did you tell Dave to be here?” Leslie asked.

Sabine, standing at the stove stirring the onion and celery, looked over her shoulder.

Max replied. “I told him to be here by ten.”

“We’re not eating until two though,” Sabine interjected. Not that she didn’t want him to show up early. Why was she arguing?

Max lifted his eyes to her. “He’s always late. I told him ten. He should be here by noon.”

She tried a light laugh. “You don’t think he can be on time?”

Leslie and Max exchanged a look of shared sympathy.

“He’ll be late.” Max’s eyelashes fluttered and he looked at Leslie again. “Oh. And Mama Capone is coming. Allegedly.”

Leslie rolled his eyes.

With all the excitement from that morning, Sabine had forgotten about Max’s promise to spill the tea about Dave’s mom.

Kara poured fresh coffee into the cups on the island. “Who’s going to fill me in on the hot goss?” She shot a wink to Sabine.

Leslie sat back from his hunched over potato peeling position. He exhaled loudly and then reached for his coffee.
