“I’m not a huge football fan,” he confessed. It wasn’t usually something he liked to admit. Because of the assumptions.

She raised surprised eyebrows.

“It’s not the football,” he amended. “Football is a cool sport. I just can’t watch it on TV. Too many ads and interruptions. It gets…overwhelming. Hard to focus. I’m afraid I’ll miss something important or hurt someone’s feelings.”

She hummed in understanding. “That’s very self-aware of you.”

He felt his entire body sigh.

That was the power of Sabine’s attention on him.

Those eyes, that smile, her voice, her mouth saying words that no one had ever said to him.

That’s probably why he always found himself blurting out the truth when she was around. Because something inside of him recognized it was safe with her.

Hell, even his friends felt safe around her. He couldn’t ever remember a time they liked one of his girlfriends.

Not that Sabine was his girlfriend.

She wasn’t.

They weren’t.

Vow of celibacy.

Not that he assumed she would just sleep with him. He wasn’t assuming that at all.

Oh shit.

He really hoped it only seemed like she could read his mind and she wasn’tactuallyreading his mind.

Except if she could read his mind, then she’d be able to see his intentions weren’t nefarious.

And he wouldn’t have to worry if she understood.

Except he’d still worry about that.

Because that’s what he did.

He blew out a nervous breath. “My friends seem to be highly enamored with you,” he pointed out the obvious.

She snorted, her eyes bouncing over his shoulder to where they sat. “I keep saving Max’s life. He has a Wookie life debt now.”

“I really am sorry I missed it,” he said softly.

Her eyes returned to his, confused. And then they softened as she realized what he meant. Because it never took her long to figure out what he was saying.

It was the kind of easy connection they’d had right away.

He’d never had that.

Ever.

With anyone.

Not even Max, who tried harder than anyone in his life to make sure Dave was understood and taken care of.

With Sabine it was effortless.
