Divide like partitions,

More walls and divisions,

Nellie Bertram leaves me in stitches.”

He sat back in the couch and laughed at his own absurdity. “That’s it. That’s what I got.”

Hannah clapped her hands and Johnny—who had returned sometime during that—joined her.

“Are we working or playing?” Johnny asked.

Someone else asking that question and Dave would’ve bristled. But there was a reason he had found his producer. He didn’t want to press record with anyone else. Johnny Torres was it. Probably the best in the business. And that was because he respected his artists.

“Just playing.”

Hannah’s bright smile turned sneaky and she cleared her throat. “Who’s ah, who’s your girl?”

“What? I don’t have a girl.” Dave’s face flamed hot but he didn’t know why. He didn’t have a girl.

“You said‘support from my girl that I can’t help but win, she keeps me on target like Katniss, she’s my arrow, I can’t miss.’”

He narrowed his eyes at her and she met his gaze unflinching.

“You just memorized that bit, huh?”

“It was catchy,” she said seriously.

A minute passed, neither one looking away. Dave finally shrugged one shoulder. “It’s just a verse. It fit.”

“Uh huh.”

Truth was, he knew exactly what girl had inspired that rhyme. But he couldn’t explain how it was just because she was kickass and awesome and had nothing to do with whatever Hannah was trying to imply.

Nothing whatsoever.

His phone, still in his hand, rang.

He held Hannah’s stare as he answered.

“Hey, ma.”

“Hey, baby.” The apologetic tone in her voice had his insides collapsing in on themselves.

She wasn’t coming.

“I thought I could get back in time for the show but Ricardo’s plane has run into some trouble and we’re too far away from any major airports.”

She said more things.

Nice things.

Apologetic things.

Flattering things.

Dave wished he was the type of person that didn’t chase everyone away.

“It’s okay, ma,” he said. “Have fun. Be safe.”
