My face lengthens with disappointment.

She laughs. “Not what you expected, huh? You really thought I’d bare my backside, just like that?”

“It did seem too good to be true…” Skewing my head I study her face out of my right eye. “But why ask me to open one eye only?”

“Because now I can say, ‘In your dreams, pirate!’” She giggles.

I don’t know whether to laugh or be cross.

She sits down next to me. “You can’t see me naked, Louis.”

“Why on earth not?”

“Because I made a vow.”

I cross my arms. “Another pirate joke coming up?”

She shakes her head. Her expression is serious.

“What made you vow to hide your body?” I ask.

“I’m afraid I can’t tell you that.”

She’s playing with me.I open my left eye. “I know! You’re a plainclothes nun! Is that it?”

“Is that even a thing?”

“You tell me.”

“I’m not a plainclothes nun.”

I lean back and cross my legs. “Then why did you make a vow?”

“How would you like a deal?” she asks instead of answering my question.

“I’m listening.”

“You can touch my body, but your eyes must be closed.”

“I’m no longer sixteen, Camille,” I say. “And neither are you.”

Her face falls. “It sounded less puerile in my head… How about a blindfold?”

“Do you mean it? Is that something you’d like to try?” Uncrossing my arms and legs, I lean forward.

She nods. “Very much.” And she blushes!

Jesus. Christ.“Fine,” I say. “Let me get a scarf.”

She picks up a cotton napkin from the table and unfolds it. “This is big enough.

She begins to fold the napkin diagonally. I turn my back to her.

She springs to her feet and ties her makeshift blindfold around my head. “You mustn’t remove it!”

“Or else?” I turn toward her voice, touching the tightly woven cloth over my eyes. “What happens if I do?”

“You’ll betray my trust.”
