“I ignored the little signs, the secrets you keep from me, the games you play… I was becoming emotionally attached.” His mouth twists as if tasting something bad. “What a pathetic fool I was!”

There’s such an irrational, excessive edge to his reaction that I find myself at a loss for words.

“You put a spell on me,” he bites out. “You manipulated me into trusting you, only to betray my trust. I honestly don’t know how I’ll last the year married to you.”

I’m still speechless. The pain constricting my lungs makes it impossible for me to utter a sound.

He pulls out his phone. “You know what? To hell with Grandpa and his detectives! To hell with the dukedom, Falcon’s Nest, Arrago, all of it!”

He’s not thinking clearly right now.“Whatever you’re going to do,” I plead, “you’ll regret it tomorrow. Please, let’s talk it over in the morning!”

“I don’t want to. I can’t be around you anymore. That poisoned vine you planted in my chest? I’m going to weed it out before it chokes my heart!”

Poisoned vine?

Louis turns the screen of his phone toward me. “See? Magdalena left me a message while we were in the bookshop. The letter and the necklace Angie sent her on my behalf ended up swaying her. She wants to see me.”

I shake my head. “Please, Louis, don’t do it!”

“I wasn’t going to. I was going to tell her that, while I hope she’ll play the lead in our movie, we won’t be lovers”—he looks skyward, as if ashamed of himself—“because I care about my marriage.”

I reach for his hand. “Sweetheart—”

He locks my wrist midair in a painful grip. “Don’t. It’s too late for that.”

He releases my hand and I let it fall limply at my side.

“Goddamn it, Camille!” He spins around and strides out the door.

He’s going to call Magdalena and jet to wherever she is.

I need air. I rush downstairs, slip into my boots, grab my coat, and sneak out. Unlocking the gate, I trudge away from the residence. The street is well lit, but I stumble as I push ahead. My vision is blurred. My ears are ringing.

Is it over? The beautiful flower that’s been growing between us, is Louis really going to crush it?With unbearable clarity, I realize that our relationship is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. He called it a “poisoned vine”…

Yes, I guess it’s over.

I lost the man I love on the same day I irrevocably lost my sister.

What do I live for now?

The sound of running footsteps behind me breaks me from my bleak thoughts. I turn around, hopeful that Louis has changed his mind. Two masked individuals grab me and cover my mouth before I can scream. They manhandle me into a car, tie my wrists and cram a black hood over my head. The material is so thick that not only can I not see anything but I can barely hear what they’re saying.

What do they want from me?

The car zooms off.

I choke and cough from the lack of air and panic. Summoning all my willpower, I focus on calming down enough to draw a breath.

Inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale.

Whatever is happening now, it won’t be the end for me. I’m the Trailer Witch. I’ll survive this.

“Who are you?” I shout out. “Where are you taking me?”

Pain in the side of my neck jolts me up.Did they jab me with a needle?

My world fades.
