Sally frowned down at the screen, the words swimming in her overtired eyes.

She’d been working on another boss screw up all morning, and now she was left mentally exhausted, facing the text she should have expected but was still surprised to receive.

Unknown: Sallina, this is Sylvester. I’m sorry about the other night. Can we talk?

Talk? More talking? Yeah right. She wasn’t getting within touching distance of him again—it was dangerous to her libido, that hussy. She shouldn’t respond…but she wanted to. She really wanted to know what the hell happened—they’d gone from post-coital bliss to him blowing her off for the ex-wife, which left her stewing and angry at him and herself all weekend.

After adding his contact information to her phone—with a bit of personal flair, she responded:

Sally: What’s there to talk about? We banged. I bailed. You and the ex got more comfortable in her hotel room. No explanation needed.

Not even two seconds passed before the dots indicating he was texting back appeared.

SlyBastard: I only stayed another 10 minutes after you left. She texted yesterday morning, wanted to meet, so I told her to meet me in the bar of her hotel. Someplace public. That was why I was there. When I saw you, though, I had to take my shot.

Sally: Seems like you scored—nothing but net.

SlyBastard: So did you, if I remember correctly. I wasn’t moaning my own name in the bathroom.

Sally: Ugh. Don’t remind me that I let you fuck me in a nasty men’s bathroom.

SlyBastard: Next time, we’ll dirty up my bed.

She snorted. Next time. He sure was an arrogant bastard, wasn’t he?

Yeah, like you don’t like how arrogant he is and that he’s able to back up every single arrogant thing he says….

Dammit.

Sally: Getting ahead of yourself, aren’t you?

SlyBastard: Of course. I have high hopes. Optimistic, remember.

Sally: For what? I’m not so sure I want to give you the chance to drop me for the ex-wife again.

SlyBastard: Fuck that, Sally. If you had stayed a second longer, you would have known I hadn’t planned to drop you at all. I’d wanted to introduce you to Loni, but when I turned to just that, you were gone.

Well, now she felt like shit. Ugh! When would she learn that making smoke as she beat feet wasn’t the best way to deal with uncomfortable situations?

Probably when you die, dumb-dumb.

Probably.

Sally: You wanted me to meet the wife?

SlyBastard: EX wife. Yes. She is my past, and I’m hoping you’ll want to be part of my future—if I can stop fucking things up long enough to get you to agree.

She chuckled at that, finding something to smile at for the first time all day.

Sally: Agree to what exactly?

Holding her breath, Sally waited for his response. Five minutes passed, then another five, until she could feel the adrenaline that had been fueling her begin to bleed from her body. Groaning, she dropped her cell to her desk and tried to focus back on the mess on her computer monitor. How the hell was she supposed to get any work done when all she could think about was, “why isn’t he responding?” “Did I push him too hard?” “Has he lost interest?” “Do I care if he lost interest?”

A ding made her flinch in surprise. She reached for her phone and blew out a breath.

SlyBastard: I want my chance with you, Sallina. Let me show you what should have happened after that night we first met if I hadn’t been such a coward.

Whoa. Not only had he laid it all out there, but he also seemed…sincere.
