“Yale.”

“Oooo, fancy pants. I’m assuming you two graduated and ended up bachelorizing all of Miami. You shake a palm tree, and bikini-clad women tumble out.”

“Nah, Jake wasn’t like that. He…uh…preferred men.”

More and more interesting!“Oh? That…didn’t cause complications?”

“Not really. I’d known he was gay since right after puberty, and he’d always known I was into women. We didn’t let it get in between us.”

“That’s awesome.”

“Yeah.”

“Was Jake an only child like you?”

“No. He had a twin.”

Things just got more interesting!

“No shit? That’s cool. Did you guys always have that third wheel dragging behind you?”

He snickered, the sound meant to be light, but there was an edge to it that made her red flags fly. “More like a pouty shadow. She—”

And there it was. “She?” Her brows furrowed in confusion. “He was a fraternal twin?”

“Yeah.”

“That would definitely make getting your first pussy a little awkward…. Wait, did you—”

“Hell no. I didn’t see her like that. She was Jake’s female counterpart, that was it. She followed us around, whining about being included, and Jake would give in most of the time. I didn’t mind, really. She was cool if a little…clingy.”

Something in the way he spoke about her made Sally’s hackles rise, a sense of disquiet slithered through her.

“Sly?” she probed, really hoping she wasn’t about to hear what she thought she was going to hear.

“Hmmm?”

“Who is Jake’s twin?”

A heavy sigh expelled from his lips, sliding over her. Despite the heat of it, ice formed in her veins. “It’s Yolanda.”

Something shot through her, making her slightly dizzy.

“Wait, wait—wait!” she exclaimed, pushing away from him to sit beside him on the bed, her body leaning away from him. There was no way her life could get that messed up; the man she was dating—and seriously, foolishly thinking she was falling in love with—had dated, married, then divorced his best friend’s sister. What the fuck? Wasn’t that like…incest?

“You married your best friend’s twin sister? After what you just said about you not seeing her like that? What’d he think of that?”

Gritting his teeth, Sly reached for her, trying to pull her back down onto him, but she moved away, sliding off the bed to stand beside it, her nakedness not even a blip on her mind.

“He died before I ever got with her.”

Oh no. “Oh my God, Sly. I’m so sorry.” Gazing into his eyes, witnessing the pain and anguish, guilt and grief in the depths of those beautiful, remarkable eyes, Sally knew there was more to the story. More that he wasn’t ready to tell her…and she understood. She, of all people, with all the shit she kept bottled up, understood.

And it scared the hell out of her. She dropped back onto the bed and laid a shaking hand over his heart.

“Me too,” he murmured, tucking a wayward lock of hair behind her ear. “More than you know.”
