Tears, hot against her cheeks, dropped to the top of her breast. She raised her hand to wipe them away, but Sly beat her to it, gently brushing his thumb under her eyes and along her cheeks. She shuddered beneath his touch.

How could a man who fucked so hard touch her so exquisitely?

“You can’t blame yourself for what happened, Sally. You were a kid. Just like AJ was a kid when he left. Did you blame him for leaving you behind?”

Damn. He went there. “No,” she murmured. “He deserved to live his life without all that shit.”

“And you didn’t?” She didn’t answer. Pulling away to look down at her, Sly brushed his thumbs under her eyes once more before gripping her chin and holding her face in place. “You were a kid. You were a victim of a shitty life. Your mom loved you. She would want you to escape, live, and thrive away from the pain. Any mom would want the same.”

“But she died, and I wasn’t there,” she wailed, finally breaking to pieces as Sly held her. “He broke her heart, her spirit, and her body, and she just finally gave up.”

Sylvester murmured words of comfort into her hair, continuing to rock her as she fell, as she shattered, as she scrambled to hold herself together.

“Let me have it all, Sallina. Let me hold you together. Give it to me, baby,” he pleaded, desperation sharpening the edge of his voice. “Let me keep you from drowning, my love.”

The dam holding back the years of guilt, pain, and sorrow crumbled, and Sallina handed her heart to Sylvester White.
