“I love you, Sly. I’ve always loved you. It has always been you for me. Yes, our marriage was a mess because neither one of us was willing to face the pain of losing Jake, but we can do better this time. This time we’ll be together because we’re meant to be together. I know I can make you love me, if you give me a chance.”

What the hell was she talking about? Meant to be together? The only woman he was meant to be with ran from his house after telling him she’d never be back.

Goddamn it, he had to get to her.

Grabbing Loni’s hand and dropping it, he growled, “We’re not talking about this, Loni. You need to leave.”

Loni gasped, disbelief in her eyes. “You want me to leave? We have to talk about this. We aren’t done—this isn’t over!” Tears poured down her cheeks, making pale grooves in her makeup.

“Loni, as far as I’m concerned, this never should have begun in the first place,” he replied, the truth he should have spoken years ago finally spilling from his mouth. Damn, he hated hurting her, but the truth needed to be said. He needed to get out from under the ghost of their past so he could move forward. So Loni could move forward. It was what was best for both of them.

He just had to make her see that.

All the color left her face, her mouth dropping open. “You can’t mean that, Sly.” Something hard and cold flashed through her eyes. “I will prove it to you. We are perfect for each other.”

He didn’t even want to know how she could believe that.

The urge to run snapped at him, long teeth and ravening maw.

Get to Sallina! Make her listen to you! Tell her the fucking truth!

“Loni, you can’t stay here. Please, be gone when I get back.” With that, Sly grabbed his keys and headed to his Audi—desperate to get to Sallina and make things right.

Please, God, let me make things right.
