‘What do you mean?’

‘That hewasher cousin.’

‘Ah,’ I said as comprehension dawned. ‘She thinks he’s dead.’

‘Exactly.’ Greg’s expression was serious. ‘And if she thinks that, then what does Beckett Frost think?’

Beckett Frost was not only the Devon pack alpha; he was also Ace’s brother which meant that he was Thea’s cousin. Beckett Frost was an alpha who ruled by fist and fur, and he had a somewhat distasteful reputation.

‘I guess time will tell,’ I said. ‘Maybe the video evidence we gave the council will be sufficient.’

‘Maybe,’ Greg replied but his tone was doubtful. ‘I’ve asked Elena to pop in to see us when she gets a minute. She was in the kitchen having some breakfast and she said she’d be in shortly.’

‘Did she see Thea?’

Greg shook his head. ‘No. I showed Thea to her room first before I went looking for Elena.’

I nodded my approval. ‘All right, let’s leave Elena in the dark for the minute and have a more thorough chat with her about her experience with the Devon pack. We probably should have dug into this sooner,’ I admitted.

‘It’s normal to want to sweep the unpleasantness under the rug.’

Why would you sweep something unpleasant under a rug?Esme interjected. Then you just have something unpleasant in your den. You’ve got to root out anything that smells foul. Ignoring it doesn’t make it go away.

I gave an audible sigh and Greg looked at me questioningly. ‘Just getting some home truths from my wolf. As usual, she’s bang on the nose. If I didn’t love her so much, it would be irritating.’

‘I envy you your connection with your wolf,’ Greg said.

‘Maybe there’s something we can do about that.’

‘I’d like that, but first we’d better deal with Elena and Thea. And the dead gargoyle.’

‘There you go again, Greg. You always have sensible priorities.’

‘Yeah, I’m a real buzz-kill like that,’ he said blandly.

I laughed. At any one time he always had at least three weapons on him – that I knew about. The man was more dangerous than dynamite, and it was laughable to call him boring. I was glad I had him in my weapons’ arsenal; with him and Esme by my side, I felt there wasn’t much we couldn’t tackle.

Famous last words.

Chapter 6

Elenadidn’tcomeknockingon our door until nearly mid-afternoon. I wasn’t sure whether it was laziness on her part or a minor power play. I thought I’d made some serious inroads in gaining the pack’s confidence during the last few weeks, and she was one of the few wolves that I actually trusted – up to a point. So her lack of reverence was irritating and upsetting. I’d thought we were past this.

Had Thea ventured out of her room and let the cat out of the bag? Maybe Elena was pissed off we’d tried to be sneaky.

Greg seemed to think Elena was dragging her heels in some sort of power play. He stood next to me behind the desk, arms folded, glowering as he gestured to the seat opposite us. ‘Take a seat,’ he said firmly, his displeasure painted on his face. I liked that he did the glaring. He was bad cop to my good cop, and good cop gets fewer frown lines. Total win.

‘I’m so sorry,’ Elena started right away, wringing her hands. ‘I met with an informant late last night, so I had a power nap which went on a little too long. Then my mum called because there’s been some sort of kerfuffle with the Devon pack. She wanted to give me a heads-up.’

‘What kind of kerfuffle?’ I asked.

‘Beckett Frost’s sister, Theodora, has gone missing and the whole pack has been ordered to track her down. My mum wanted to know if I’d heard from her. Thea and I used to be friends but we lost touch when I moved here a couple of years ago.’

‘His sister?’ I repeated. Not cousin. Well, damn: catching Thea in a lie like that was strike one. I don’t like being lied to. ‘And have you? Heard from her, I mean.’

Elena shook her head. ‘No, as I said to Mum, all I’ve had was a brief consolation message when Jackson died. My head was pretty much up my arse at that point, so I don’t think I even replied to the message.’

That wasn’t the picture that Thea had painted. Alarm bells were ringing and I exchanged a grim glance with Greg. ‘Tell me a little about Beckett Frost.’
