‘No. They were all in class.’

‘Okay. Talk to me about Bobby’s dad. He went missing, too?’

Sonia sounded frustrated. ‘I just don’t see what Bobby’s dad has to do with any of this. He’s been gone over seven years now. We need to find Bobby, not his dad.’

‘Do you think his dad is alive?’

Sonia gave a soft sigh. ‘No.’

‘So you don’t think he could have taken Bobby?’

‘No.’

Jess asked a few more questions, then told me she was done. I took her off speaker. ‘She was lying when she said she didn’t think he was alive, but telling the truth for the rest. She doesn’t think the dad was involved in Bobby’s disappearance.’

‘That’s useful. Thanks, Jess.’

‘Love you, Luce.’

‘Back at you.’ I hung up.

Sonia was looking at me hopefully. ‘Can your friend help?’

‘She had some suggestions, but she’s on another case right now. I’ve called Amber DeLea. She’s on her way, but she needs something to scry with.’

‘I … I don’t have the money to pay for scrying. I mean, I’ll sell the house to raise money but it’ll take time…’

‘The pack will pay,’ I assured her.

Her eyes filled with tears. ‘Thank you.’

I waved it away. ‘It’s the pack’s money – it is there literally to help the pack, for exactly this kind of situation. Now, I need you to go home and find something that Bobby is really connected to.’

Sonia scrubbed at her tears, happy to have something productive to do. ‘His wolfy. He’s had it since he was little. That would do it, for sure.’

‘Is it at home?’

Sonia nodded.

I turned to Greg. ‘Can you run Sonia home and back? Amber will be here in about forty-five minutes.’

‘Yes, ma’am.’ He was always so proper in front of other pack members. It drove me wild; I much preferred it when he called me Sunshine or Peaches, or one of his other ridiculous nicknames.

‘Before that, can you give me Bob’s number?’ I asked.

He raised an eyebrow but nodded, pulled out his phone and sent me an e-business card. ‘He probably won’t be awake for another hour or so, until darkness starts to fall.’

‘Thanks.’

‘I need to go to the toilet.’ Sonia said. ‘I’ll meet you out front in a minute.’ She left Greg and I alone.

‘This day is going down the toilet,’ I commented. ‘God, I hope Bobby is all right. You think he’s been snatched?’

Greg nodded reluctantly. ‘He’s a good kid, and Sonia is a good mum. She’s taught him all about stranger danger. He wouldn’t go off with just anyone.’

‘But someone claiming to be his dad?’

‘Yeah. That would be hard for any fatherless kid to resist.’
