‘I’m not done, you know.’

‘With what?’

‘Whatever this is. There’s a whole lot more to the gargoyles than people know. And I’m going to find out.’

‘All power to you, my cunning canine. Let’s see what you can dig up. But don’t be surprised if it’s nothing.’

‘I’m going to find out about your beef with the witches,’ I promised.

‘If you do, then you unlock the whole thing,’ Reynard said, his eyes gleaming. ‘Dig away. Let’s see what you can find.’

Chapter 25

IleftLiamandGreg to wait for Steve, and walked over to Bastion and a sulky looking Charlize. Esme was growling in my head as we approached. She remembered the slam on the floor all too clearly. So did I – my ribs and my shoulderhurt.

‘Are you all right?’ I asked Bastion.

He gave a slight shrug. ‘I’m alive.’

‘That’s not quite the same thing.’

‘No. It’s not.’

‘Can I get you anything?’

‘Amber DeLea says I will recover further with time.’

‘Recover?’ Charlize asked. ‘What’s wrong?’

‘Your witchy friend cursed your dad,’ I said.

‘She cursed the room and I pulled the curse down on myself,’ Bastion corrected me.

Charlize’s eyebrows shot up. ‘That’s a rooky mistake, Dad.’

‘I was … concerned for you. I didn’t want my companions to harm you.’

‘I’m a griffin,’ she snorted. ‘What could a bunch of wolves and fire elementals do to me?’

‘You’re not immortal,’ he rebuked her. ‘They could do plenty, including kill you.’

‘You were worried about me?’ she asked, astonished.

‘Indeed.’

Charlize blinked. ‘Huh.’

‘The witch,’ I started. ‘What can you tell me about her?’

‘Not a whole lot. Gillian dealt with her primarily.’ Her eyes narrowed suddenly. ‘Thatbitch!’ she swore.

‘What?’

‘The witch! She put a compulsion on me. That’s why I felt so inclined to kill Gillian. Getting rid of the ogre would have tidied up the witch’s mess for her.’

‘Letting a witch put a compulsion on you, now thatisa rookie error,’ Bastion commented.

Charlize glared. ‘Nowthat’sthe father I know and love.’
