‘It’s not like that. He’s a friend.’

‘Friend or not, he’s been watching you like you’re a rare steak.’

‘I nearly had an orgasm when he and tall-dark-and-broody came to blows.’

‘He was just keeping an eye on me, platonically.’

Jane shook her head. ‘His eyes did not say platonic; they said “fuck me”. But if you’re in a platonic place, are you sure you want a ride home with him? I don’t want him taking advantage. I can get a taxi with you, if you want.’

I hugged her. I loved Jane, she was so kind. ‘It’s fine. We’re housemates so it makes sense for us to ride home together. Thanks for tonight, girls. I’ve had such a good time. When you see Sharon, say congrats again for her promotion.’

‘Will do. Good night, Lucy. Text me when you’re home safe.’

‘I will. Keep an eye on Sharon. Don’t let her leave with that guy – he’s a douche.’ I gestured at Voltaire. They promised they would and I waved goodbye.

I looked around, trying to spot the brethren lurking around but no one stood out. ‘Let’s go home,’ I shouted loudly to Greg. We stepped out of the hot club and the cool air struck me, making my head spin. Just like that, my buzz was back.

I stepped towards the car but my swagger was a little more stagger than I’d intended. Too many Jaeger Bombs. Greg wrapped a supporting arm around my shoulders. ‘Come on, Bambi, let’s get you home.’

‘I knew you secretly loved Disney!’

‘Who doesn’t love Disney?’

He poured me into the car and fastened my seatbelt. ‘I’m not that drunk,’ I protested.

‘Humour me.’

‘You’ve still got guys on my friends?’

‘They’re on the job until your friends go home,’ he promised.

I sank back into the seat, reassured. Life was more stressful knowing that things that went bump in the night really did exist.

Greg started the car and I laughed as he switched the playlist to Disney. I sang my lungs out all the way home and let the stress wash away, bringing back the last of my happy buzz. The only thing that would have made it better was if my best friend, Jess, had been there to sing with me.

Greg saw me up to my room and unlocked the door for me after I’d fumbled with my key for a solid minute. ‘The key is tricksy,’ I complained.

‘Sure it is,’ he agreed, looking amused. He pressed a kiss to my hair. ‘Esme, you take it from here.’

Tell him I will.

You’re as inebriated as me. We’re joined together.

Aloud I sang, ‘Like rama lama ka dinga da dinga dong.’ There was always time for a bit ofGrease. Greg laughed. I gave him a wink and started singing the entire song, dragging him into my room as I danced around him singing, ‘We go together.’

‘You’re so smashed, you’re not going to remember this in the morning. Go to bed.’ He extricated himself from my arms. ‘Sleep well, Bambi.’

‘Do you have to go?’ I pouted.

He ran his hand through his short blond hair. ‘I wish I didn’t but I do. Another time, when you haven’t had twenty Jaeger Bombs and ten tequilas. Good night, love.’

He left before I could beg him to stay, which was probably a good thing but felt like a shame. My decision-making might have been slightly impaired, but I didn’t think so. It felt like I was making good choices.

I had a moment of wondering whether he was off to visit that bitch Mindy, but Esme snorted in my head.He wants to mate with you.

I’m pretty sure he’s already mated with her.

So? If she hasn’t had pups, it doesn’t matter.
