‘So we just hop on over there.’

‘No. Only the seer who made it can access the prophecy.’

‘And have you managed to find the seer?’ This was like getting blood out of a stone.

‘I have.’

‘Great! Let’s ask the seer what the prophecy was.’

‘That was my plan.’

‘Was?’

‘The seer is dead.’

I let that sink in. Finally I said, ‘We’re up shit creek without a paddle. I guess we just have to draw a line through the prophecy. Maybe it wasn’t important.’

‘It was important enough for your parents to be killed. The only reason you’re alive was because you had a last minute sleep over at your cousin’s house so that Luca could take Maria out on a date. Otherwise you’d have been at home with them.’

‘You think they were killed because of me?’

‘I think they were killed because of theprophecyabout you. The timing is rather odd. The prophecy orb was registered at Liverpool Town Hall only the week before they died.’

‘But I was about three years old when they died, and you said the prophecy was made when I was born. Why did it take so long to register it?’

‘Sometimes seeing the future can muddle a seer. It might simply have slipped her mind, though in this case I doubt it. Seer Lady Harding was a force to be reckoned with.’

I blinked at this. ‘Mrs H was the seer?’

He stilled. ‘You knew her?’

‘All my life. She lived next door to my best friend, Jess. You know her as Jinx.’

‘A seer has three years to register a prophecy. She waited as long as she could before doing so.’

‘She knew it was going to cause trouble.’

‘That would be my supposition.’

Fuck. I had been the cause of my parent’s death. Shaken, I stepped into Greg’s arms and he tightened them around me. ‘Not your fault,’ he murmured.

‘It kinda feels like it is,’ I whispered into his shoulder.

Ares gave an angry neigh as he slammed his clawed feet hard on the ground and started towards Alessandro. ‘Whoa! It’s not his fault I’m upset.’ I said hastily with my voice and my mind. ‘Chill.’

Angry red eyes swung towards me. I stepped out of Greg’s arms to reassure him before he pulverised my great-great-whatever-grandfather. ‘He’s family,’ I said firmly. ‘He helped save me from people who were trying to kill me. He even faked my death.’

Alessandro nodded, his eyes hard. ‘I did everything I could to keep you safe. I took you to a black witch and had you stripped of your magic.’

‘You had me extinguished?’ I said in a small voice. That could have killed me.

‘To keep you safe, hidden. I sent you away toprotectyou.’ There was a long moment of silence before he sighed. ‘And yet here you are in the Other realm despite everything I did. And you know what that means?’

‘What?’

‘You’re in danger. Whoever killed your parents will be gunning for you.’

‘They’ll have to get through me first,’ Greg growled. Ares threw his head back in agreement.

Alessandro raised that condescending eyebrow again. ‘They got through two of the strongest fire elementals I’ve ever seen, both of whom were destined for the Pit.’ I knew enough about fire elementals to know that the Pit was their ruling body. ‘You don’t stand a chance.’

‘Well, that’s an optimistic viewpoint.’

‘I didn’t come here to toot your horn, I came to warn you. Go into hiding or die.’

I didn’t like either of those options. Esme growled in my head. I raised my chin. ‘Death then,’ I said rebelliously. ‘Their death.’

Nothing was going to stop me from finding my parent’s killers. And if James had taught me one thing, it was that you don’t leave an enemy alive.

I didn’t intend to make the same mistake twice.
