Chapter Thirty

Gray has been watching the house for the last few days. Nate was going back and forth between his office, his home, and the mansion. Weiler, however, did not leave at all—until a little change in plans forced the two men to go out of town.

The unexpected complications at the new Altman hotel in Paris forced Nate to take the jet out of the country, which resulted in an extended absence of Lilly’s watchdog.

We had two days to get everything ready for Lilly, including her accommodations. I briefly contemplated making them a little more inviting than how the pawn has been stored for the last decade, but then, why? She has a mattress and a toilet at her disposal. That's more than he's gotten for years. I have not yet made up my mind on the restraints. Let's see how the girl behaves.

Got her. The little bitch stabbed me.

Gray's text lights up my phone at 11:53, and the corner of my mouth tugs upward. The kid has spunk, I’ll give her that. The years of training that Tristen put Lilly through paid off. Too bad for her, though, that I brought some of the paralytic drugs with me.

I have to wait another hour before the garage door rolls up. I made sure not to wear white today; I'm still furious with Gray for ruining my new linen pants with his blood.

Standing in the door, I watch him get out of the SUV and walk around to the back.

"Did she give you any more trouble?"

He peers around the back of the car. "Not once I got the syringe in. Dropped faster than you can down a glass of your fancy wine."

"WATCH IT, Francis!"

He scowls at me. I haven't called him by his given name in over twenty-five years—unless he’s pissed me off.

"Get her in the house and to her room." I turn and head straight for the kitchen. I’ve already gone through most of my pills, which means I have to resort to other means to calm myself. And stabbing his muscle more would be counterproductive; I need him to keep Lilly in check until I get what we came for.

"Maybe we should’ve reduced the dose? Or not mix it with the sedative. She hasn’t moved in hours." Gray cocks his head as he watches Lilly on the monitor. It’s been half a day, and I want to go back home and finally be done with this decade-long farce, but I learned a long time ago, things rarely go how you want them to.

"She wakes up when she wakes up. Enjoy the downtime," I say absently as I pour another glass.

"Christ, woman, it’s not even noon." He purses his lips at me.

"That’s rich coming from someone who gets high every chance he gets." His eyes widen. Yes, I know that he has not been as clean as he pretends to be.

"She's moving!" Gray suddenly exclaims.

I step up behind him to watch the feed, and a slow smile spreads across my face. "Good morning, Lilly," I whisper to the screen.
