Rhys retakes my hand and squeezes it. "You sure you don't want me with you?"

Yes, please stay with me.

"I have to do this alone," I tell him with as much confidence as I can muster, given the pit that has rooted itself in my stomach and my voice cracking.

"Ok." He kisses me on the cheek, and I expect him to follow Henry, but instead, he levels George.

"If anyone harms her, I will hold you responsible. I don’t care that you make everyone shit their pants just by looking at you. If anything happens, you jump in front of her, or I will come after you with your own gun. I know the combination to your safe; don’t forget that." I am shocked at the menace that rolls off Rhys’s tongue but equally touched by it. He loves George. The two have a bond that none of us understand, but he is one hundred percent serious.

George bows his head. "I will." He doesn’t say anything else, but there is also no need for more words. We all know that this man would put anything on the line for Nate and me.

With one last squeeze of my hand, Rhys lets go and walks past the first three rows. He positions himself next to Henry's wheelchair, not moving into the row to sit down.

The sudden loss of his contact makes me almost double over. My anchor. Before I can change my mind and race after Rhys, begging him to come back, I turn and follow George.

I make my way to my assigned seat between Agent Lanning and Doctor Stern. The poor man looks like he’s going to pass out any second. He probably never expected to be in this situation, but his testimony is prudent.

This iswhere we wait until George taps the microphone on the podium in front of us. "If you would please all take your seats. The press conference is about to begin." I scan the room and take in several sets of wide eyes staring at the man who just addressed them. It's almost comical how intimidating he is despite being dressed all professional in a pressed suit.
