"Must be nice to be rich, huh?" I say cheekily.

"You are just as rich; don’t forget that," he counters with humor.

Shit, I did forget.

"I’ll be back later tonight," he assures me, and a calmness settles inside my chest.

The corner of my mouth pulls up until the memory of last night's findings surges to the surface like an erupting geyser. The statements and photo albums with my childhood pictures are still scattered over Brooks's office floor. I gasp, and Nate's eyes narrow at the camera in the ceiling as if he can see me.

"Lilly, what’s wrong?"

"I need to show you something, but I don’t know if we should do this over—"

"Darling?" a female voice comes through the speaker, and Margot appears in the frame on the camera. "What are you doing in here?" She glances around, confused. Understandable since, technically, the room Nate is in is just a random guest room.

"I had to take a quick call." Nate disconnects the phone, and I watch him usher her out of my bedroom, glancing up one last time.

Crap. I wanted to confess at least where I was last night, even if we didn't have time to discuss the rest until later. It feels like every time one of us makes progress, something happens—in this case, brunch at the other end of the state—and delays things. I push back from the desk a little more forcefully.

I should’ve woken him up last night.

George is leaning against the doorframe, watching me with an indecipherable expression.

"What?" I raise my eyebrows, waiting. Does he want me to elaborate on what I found?

The corner of his mouth tilts up. "It’s good to see you and Nate together."

Standing up, I make my way over to him, point my finger, and circle it toward his head. "George, you're doing it again."

It’s his turn to scowl. I clarify with a grin, "You’re smiling."

My bodyguard just shakes his head, turns, and leaves, but not before I see his mouth quirk up at the corner. As he walks away, I hear him calling out, "You are quite the brat, Miss Lilly."

Rolling my eyes, I follow. I can make it until Nate is back later.
