"Whose fault is that?" Anger overtakes my senses again, and I'm grateful for the change. I don't like losing it in front of people, least of all my father.

He sighs. "I don't know how you found out about Hector, and I won't ask—yet. I have kept a lot from you—not just you, but also your mother—to keep this family safe. In my line of work, I've made enemies, and I was prepared for that. When my family was at risk, I handled it the way I knew how, which in hindsight was not the best solution. I..." My father swallows hard. "I pushed you away to not make you a target as well. Your feelings for Lilly made you reckless. The fact that everyone believed she was your sister was never a concern for me; that would’ve been an easy fix, telling people she was adopted. But I couldn’t risk my son’s life being threatened. It was only a matter of time before Lilly would be in the crossfire again."

"What crossfire?" He gives me answers, but at the same time, he speaks in riddles that raise more questions.

"I don't have all the facts either, Rhys. I have some, but a lot are suspicions. Some of them are probably accurate, but without confirmation or proof, I won't cause my family unnecessary panic."

"So, essentially, you’re not giving me anything. AGAIN!" I bark the last word at him.

"I can give you one answer." His gaze jumps back and forth between my eyes. "I've never not cared for you. You are my son, and I would do anything to keep you safe. My methods may not have been the best, but I always knew where you were and made sure you were safe."

The steadily building rage deflates, and for the first time since being a little boy, I hug my father. He wraps his arms around my shoulders, and I feel him shudder.

I haven’t gotten any answers for Lilly, but I have my father back.
