Chapter Twenty-Seven

I pullinto the garage and shoot my brother a text. I confirm that the roll gate is down before getting out of the SUV and making my way through the mudroom to the kitchen. I’ve just put down the keys on the island when my phone starts vibrating in my pocket again.

Chill out, Nate. I would’ve called—

But when I see the name on the screen, my eyebrows scrunch together. Denielle. I didn't expect to hear from her until Friday when she'd be back in Westbridge.

"Hey, D. What’s—"

"HE CHEATED!" My best friend's screech makes me pull the phone away from my ear.

"Who?" I’m genuinely confused.

"CHARLIE. WHO DO YOU THINK I'M TALKING ABOUT? THAT POOR EXCUSE OF A WALKING DICK STUCK HIS MINI-SAUSAGE INTO A SORORITY SLUT!"

Oh. Ohhhh! Well, shit.

"Um, I am seriously speechless, D. I—"

She interrupts me with more obscenities, followed by,"THAT SON OF A—"

The phone could be at the other end of the thousand-square-foot kitchen, and I'd still hear her loud and clear.

I gentle my tone. "Den, you need to turn it down a bit. My eardrum is about to burst." If she'd been in front of me, I would've lifted my hands in an I-surrender gesture. Anything for her not to bite my head off. I’ve rarely seen, or heard, her this livid.

A sigh comes from the other end of the line. "I'm sorry, babe. I'm just...I don't believe what just happened."

"What did happen?" I glance at the clock on the stove. It’s midday on a Wednesday—not the most common time to discover your long-term boyfriend is cheating.

"He went to a frat party last night, and I didn't feel like going. He's been dragging me to one party after another since I got here." My eyebrows pull together. That doesn't sound like the Charlie I know, but I don't interrupt her. "When he didn't come home, I called his friend, who told me where the party was. I just knew something was off based on how his dickwad frat brother acted on the phone." She draws in a deep breath. "So, I get to the house. It was like a mass orgy, babe! Passed out naked people everywhere."

What the fuck?

"I step over the, uh...bodies—some seriously going at it right there in the middle of the day. Gross. And then I start opening random doors. The third one reveals Charlie dipping his dick into some blonde bimbo with fake tits."

Um, wow.

My jaw drops. Literally. And I force myself to close my mouth.

"What did you do?" I’m a little scared to ask.

"Nothing there." Her reply is just a quiet mumble.

"There?" My hand tightens around the phone. This cannot be good.

"I was too stunned to confront him in front of a house full of naked asses. I walked back to his place and..."

Uh-oh. "And?"

"I went a little crazy on his apartment," Den confesses.

"Explain, please." My tone is careful not to set her off again. My ear just stopped ringing.

"Weeell, his entire wardrobe is in the Goodwill dumpster down the road, and so is every electronic device I could carry there. The rest..."

"Jesus Christ, Den. What did you do with the rest?" I pinch the bridge of my nose, at the same time trying to stifle a laugh. You do not want Denielle Keller as your enemy.

"I may have just thrown it out the window. At least some poor soul will benefit from this."
