If it hadn’t been for Owen, she probably would still be there, but she couldn’t believe that it would be good for Owen to be around someone who was so constantly negative. She found him picking up some of her mannerisms and her comments, and she didn’t want her son to be smothered with negativity.

Maybe she should have stayed.

It seemed like she could find negativity no matter where she went.

Well, she hadn’t been looking for a job this morning when she got up, and she’d be just fine without it when she got home.

“You know what, I don’t think you and I would be very compatible. I’m sure you can find someone else who is much better suited for the job than I am. I wish you luck.”

Chapter 5

Treat your husbandor wife the way you would want to be treated. - Mary Altis, St. Louis, MO

––––––––

Feeling pretty goodfor about three seconds, Peyton turned and stalked down the steps, trying to pretend she wasn’t stomping, and strode to her car.

She was rather proud of herself that she didn’t run.

Without looking at Bryce, she got in, started it, and backed out.

She didn’t need that man, and she didn’t need his library, and she didn’t need his mansion, no matter how intriguing it looked.

Some of her bluster had faded by the time she pulled into the back of her shop in Sweet Water.

She was ashamed of herself for losing her temper by the time she’d finished telling her story to the Piece Makers.

Tuesday was a terribly slow day for her, and the shop was empty. All four of the Piece Makers were back in the booth where they’d begun the morning, all of them with coffee in front of them except for Vicki, who finally had her tea.

“And so I left,” she said simply. Feeling stupid. How could she explain to them how upset she had been at the time?

Now, it seemed like a simple matter of being an adult, allowing unkind words to bounce right off of her, and giving the man benefit of the doubt. Maybe his toilet had overflowed that morning.

“Maybe he was out of coffee.” She eyed the ladies. That seemed to be what they were thinking. It was something silly, and she had allowed herself to quit too easily.

“I knew he was going to be a rather difficult man,” Charlene said slowly. “I guess I should have warned you before you went out.”
