“I can’t even get Orchid to walk to the park with me, let alone leave town.”

“Well, the Piece Makers are the matchmaking ladies who set Peyton and me up. But they’re pretty particular and I can’t guarantee that they’ll think you and Orchid are a good match. They might have someone else in mind for her.”

The idea of Orchid with someone else tore at Dwight’s insides to the point where he almost clutched his stomach.

“If they don’t...take...me, I’ll figure things out on my own.”

At this statement, Bryce stopped. “It would be best to accept their help. They’re uncanny in their knowledge of who belongs together.” Bryce tilted his head. “Maybe they’ll decide you belong with someone else.”

“No.” He’d tried. But ever since he’d met Orchid, he hadn’t been able to get interested in anyone else. Not even a little.

Bryce started walking, heading toward a group of older ladies sitting at a table together. The one in the middle with the pretty blue hair seemed to be the ring leader.

“Alright, follow my lead and try to make yourself look like a Son of Sweet Water.”

“A Son of What?” Dwight said, but it was too late because Bryce had stopped in front of the table. The ladies’ chatter died out and their heads turned to look at him.

What had he gotten himself into?
