“On the bed now. I promise I’ll make this a night to remember.”

No!

No!

No!

I feel his hands cup my cheeks ever so lovingly, making me wince away from his touch, but he doesn’t relent and forcefully holds my head in his grip. Then, out of nowhere, I feel his lips on mine. I flinch back from his possessive kiss, but his lips never waver from mine.

But something is different.

His kiss doesn’t feel like it’s a prison of his making anymore.

It suddenly feels like freedom, like someone handed me the keys to my jail cell and gave me permission to fling the door wide open.

Where before there was only sadistic malice in the kiss, there’s love in it now, real love, and it’s so palpable that I hunger to taste more of it. When the sound of a familiar moan rings through my ears, I open my eyes and find Zoey kissing me. Her fingers run through my hair as she sits on my lap, her body pressed against mine. I shut my eyelids again and just let her warmth burn all those horrid nightmares away. I kiss Zoey like my fucking life depends on it, and frankly, it feels like it does.

It’s her.

My saving grace has always been her.

On a subconscious level, I knew she was my salvation from the first moment I met her in that bathroom. I held onto her innocence to keep whatever was left of mine intact. Now, she’s breathing life into a ghost long forgotten and discarded. She’s giving me a second chance, one where there aren’t any monsters biding their time to capture me in the dark.

I’m the one that monsters should fear.

I’m their living, breathing retribution.

And Zoey is my salvation, the one who will pick up the shattered pieces of my soul and put it back together again when all this is over and done with. Her kiss is the only promise that matters. The only promise that I shouldn’t fear. The only one that will save me in the end.

When she senses that I’m back to my old self, she pulls away and gently strokes my cheek with her palm. “Never leave me like that again. Never, my wolf. They can’t have you. You’re mine now.”

I press my temple to hers and breathe her in.

“Promise me,” she insists.

“I promise, little doe. I’m yours. Always have been. Always will be,” I croak, my voice showing how close I had been to the edge.

She instantly relaxes in my embrace, her head nestling on my shoulder. I pry my eyes off her to look at the other person in the room that witnessed my panic attack.

Hale’s hands are in fists at his sides, and his expression is thunderous. We stare at each other until he breaks the connection to point a finger at me.

“One day you’re going to tell me what the fuck I just witnessed, and that day, Ghost, better be soon.”

I offer him a curt nod, since I know he’s giving me some leniency in not forcing me to explain in this precise moment. I don’t think I would have had the energy anyway.

“Get some fucking rest. You need it. I’ll be back bright and early tomorrow for us to go after the fuckers in that book. Got it?”

Another nod.

“Good, and kid…” He points to Zoey. “Take care of him.”

“I will.” She smiles, hugging me closer.

He lets out a relieved breath and offers her a genuine smile of his own.

“That’s my cue. Now go and fuck like bunnies or whatever you two get up to. I’ll be back in the morning.”

And with that, he leaves.
