He screams as he falls back, his chest, neck, and face cut. He looks down at the wound in confusion and shock. “What the fuck?”

Flashing the blade in the light, I grin. “What? I thought you wanted to party?”

“Oh, you’re fucking crazy!” He turns to his friend, but Gray is there with his eyes on the black-haired man as he grabs the blond one and slits his throat. Kicking the door shut, Gray cuts off his escape route as he drops the blond to the ground while he chokes on his own blood.

Gray’s eyes are hard, angry, and possessive.

“This one is mine,” I purr as I step up to the black-haired one. I tap him on the side, and he spins so he can keep us both in view. “You hear that? You’re mine.”

“Look, I’m sorry, I didn’t know she was your girl,” he says, his face pale as he glances at his friend and then Gray.

“Hey, asshole!” I yell. “Stop looking at him. I’m the one you should fear right now.”

I leap at him, and he stumbles back, so I ride him down to the ground, pressing the knife to his throat as I lean in. “Tell me, do the people you work for let you touch the kids, or do you just watch?”

He stops breathing as he stares up at me. “Oh God,” he whispers.

“Nope, sorry, just the devil and his bitch.” I laugh as I lift the knife and stab it into his chest, over and over. I let my anger at what they did to Gray and all those kids flow out of me, and I don’t even realize I’m screaming.

His eyes are open, unseeing, and I’m still stabbing him.

Arms wrap around me and hoist me into the air, then a hand grabs my wrist cruelly, forcing me to drop the blade before I’m backed into the wall. Fingers circle my throat until I blink and bring Gray into focus.

“He’s dead, little doe,” he promises.

I still, waiting and watching. For his disgust maybe?

After all, I just brutally killed someone.

I thought it would feel…more, more…fucked up, but instead I feel good, like I’ve rid this world of an evil bastard and I’m happy for it.

“You are fucking magnificent,” he growls and slams his lips onto mine. When he pulls back, he presses his forehead to mine. “Never be afraid of how I will react, little doe. I’m yours. Nothing you could do, say, or think would ever scare me away, baby. This thing… us, it’s forever.”

Tears almost fill my eyes. “How do you always say the right thing?” I murmur.

“Not always, now make your sexy ass useful and help me clean this scene.” He winks, pulling away.

We clean up the scene together, leaving nothing but the bodies behind.

A threat, a warning, that we are coming.

CHAPTER25

Zoey

Iignore my ringing phone and grin at Cara, watching her lips twist at the sour cocktail I bought her. “Fuck, that’s disgusting, Zo!”

“Did Cara fucking Nightingale just swear?” I pretend to be shocked, clutching my chest. She rolls her eyes, even as her cheeks heat. We are in an expensive cocktail bar near where Cara lives since she fears going too far in case her daddy sees her getting up to no good, which he already thinks I am.

He isn’t wrong. If he knew what I liked to do for fun and who I was dating, he would keep his baby girl far away from me.

But I need this, need time with Cara. My entire world has been absorbed with Gray and our mission, and sometimes a girl just needs her bestie. “Alaric still isn’t talking to me,” I admit.

“Oh, Zoey, I’m sorry.” She covers my hand on the black table we are sitting at. The booth is tucked into a back corner, away from prying eyes. We keep our distance from the men in suits and the women dressed to the nines, wanting it to just be us. Soft music pumps through the speakers, and the lights are dimmed to create a sultry atmosphere. It’s a cool place with a huge bar in the middle of the room that has floor-to-ceiling shelves displaying every liquor imaginable.

I shrug and down my cocktail, grimacing at the sweetness of what she ordered for me—our favorite game. “It is what it is.”

“I know, but I also know how much you love him. He’s your dad, Zoey. He’ll come around,” she states, always so sure.
