“You’re not his type, sweetie. Why don’t you let the grown-ups play tonight?” That Kennedy slithered onto Lucas’s stool with a pointed look in my direction.

She was tall and stylish. Everything tweezed and manicured to perfection. She was everything I wasn’t. But I rallied because screw her.

“Kennedy, is it? You already asked Lucas to fuck you tonight. He said no, and begging doesn’t go with that outfit.”

“I won’t have to beg. Once you leave, he’ll be all mine. He’s being polite, honey.” Her cruel eyes filled with mocking pity. “Do you honestly believe he prefers you to me?”

A red-hot blush surged up my neck. Kennedy smirked and nodded to my purse and coat hanging under the bar.

Then, I felt warmth as Lucas placed his arm around my shoulders and stood next to me.

“Kennedy, what are you doing?” He pulled my shoulder tighter to his side. His unyielding side. Who has concrete slabs of muscle in their sides? Lucas Bakker.

That Kennedy softened in surprise. Her face transformed before us.

“Jo’s not a hook-up,” Lucas said. “We came together. We’ll leave together. She’s important to me, and you’re being rude.”

Her face was a storm, and fire flew out of her eyes. I looked to see if Lucas’s eyebrows were still there. Yep, and his arm was still around me, still pulling me into the hard warmth of his body. Eat your heart out, Kennedy.

“You’re telling me you’re a one-woman man now? I doubt you’re capable of it.”

“I finally found someone worth the effort,” Lucas said, his tone cold.

That pissed her off more. She stood with purpose. “Never call me.” She whispered and headed back toward the pool tables.

“You take care now,” I shouted after her.

Lucas casually took his seat and sipped his bourbon. “Sorry about her,” he said.

“What. A. Bitch. You slept with her? What were you thinking?”

Lucas shifted in his seat. “Damn, Jo. Don’t hold back.”

I crossed my arms.

“Okay, fine, last year. I don’t remember her being such a bitch, though.”

“Well, you won’t be doing it again after that scathing take-down and in front of the help.” I gestured to myself.

“Jo, you’re not the help. I’m not your boss or even co-worker. And I don’t want to do it again.”

“Come on, Lucas. Tall thin beauty like that?”

“Tall, thin, and pampered. But beautiful?” He shook his head. “I don’t see it.”

Without consulting my brain, my heart did a little flip.

LUCAS

March first,and it was snowing.

“Hey Luc, need a ride?” my brother Finn called from the barn door.

I looked at my sleek, black, rear-wheel-drive Mercedes. I was not driving my car in this.

“Yeah, a ride would be great.”
