“Thanks. Luc’s mom helped, and Eduardo is awesome. We had a lot of fun.”

Lucas made a low growl, and my pulse jumped. What was it with that growl? His jaw worked as he swallowed and looked away. Finn stared at him with a big grin.

“What?” I asked, glancing between them.

“Nothing,” Lucas said, and Finn’s grin became a full chuckle as he pulled Emily’s back into his front and placed a kiss on her cheek.

“What are you guys drinkin’?” Finn asked.

“Tequila. You sprang for the good sipping stuff, but I’m more about the shots of Cuervo after a shift,” I said.

“The good stuff, that’s Luc. He’s in charge of the bar budget, and I think he pads it, a lot.”

Lucas shrugged. “This crowd is practically family. Plus, tomorrow’s a workday for everyone even though it’s a weekend. No dumbasses puking up hundred-dollar liquor tonight. Why not splurge on some things.”

Generous, not flashy. I liked him so much. Damn it.

Emily and Finn joined us for the second shot, and once again, Lucas stared at my throat before he tossed back his.

“That’s it for me,” I said. “I have a two-shot limit when there’s still a lot of work to do.”

“Not yet.” Lucas’s playful grin was back. “Dance with me.” He took my hand, and there was that zing, still. He laced his fingers with mine and pulled me toward the cleared space by the DJ that served as the dance floor. A few couples swayed and laughed. Two school-age girls twirled together, giggling with delight, watching their skirts fly out.

“Papa, did you see me?” One of them shouted to an approaching man with a big smile for his little girl. It was like a family wedding, not a work party.

Lucas turned and pulled me close. He was tall, but my work clogs helped to even us out. Still holding one hand, he wrapped his other arm snug around my waist and began to move. I snaked my hand up to his shoulder while his jaw grazed the side of my face. Closing my eyes, I inhaled his familiar scent. I loved the way he smelled. Another mystery of human chemistry.

“You did an amazing job tonight,” he said.

“Thanks. I’m glad it went well.”

“We’re lucky to have you. I’m lucky to have you.” His words set off a slew of butterflies in my stomach.

I tried to be cool. “I had a good team.”

Lucas growled low, then cleared his throat.

“What?” I asked.

“Nothing.”

“That growl wasn’t nothing. Either you’re seconds from eating me out on this dance floor, or you’re angry.”

Lucas blinked. I nudged his shoulder.

“I’m imagining option one. Give me a second.”

“Lucas!”

“All right. I saw you cooking with Eduardo. I didn’t like it. I know it sounds crazy, but I didn’t like it.” His possessive whine was kind of endearing.

“What? Why? We were cooking.”

“I know, and I feel like a bastard for thinking it, but I wanted to kick him out and take his place. I want that easy kitchen routine to only be with me.” His eyes burned into mine. “The kitchen is your kingdom, and I want to be special there.”

“Lucas, you’re special in the bedroom. Would you rather be special in the kitchen?”

“Why can’t I be special in both? I’m a greedy bastard. That shouldn’t surprise anyone. I want to be the best everywhere. No other man comparing in the kitchen, between your thighs, or behind those beautiful brown eyes.”
