I wasn’t more talented than others. I was more tolerant. I could stay with the project and push it to success. Others could do that too. I wasn’t so special in tech. Not like I was special in Perry Harbor. I was the only one who could solve some of the problems at the farm, and I was the only one who could love Jo the way she deserved. I was a greedy bastard. I wanted to be special in a lot of places, not just tech.

I’d made some positive changes at the farm, and I had some ideas for even more. I was already hatching plans for a couple apps other farms could also use to help scale their business and get the most out of the festival month. I could still make a difference in the world, the world close to me.

Jo’s dream was in Perry Harbor. The more nights I spent thinking about a life with her and a job coding again at my own consulting firm, the more I realized I had a dream. And it was in Perry Harbor, too. I texted Jo as soon as the plane taxied to the airport.

Me:Sweetness. I’m back from Amsterdam and I need to hear your voice. Call me when you get a chance.

My phone rang, and I jumped to answer it.

“Hey, man. You made it back to the States,” my brother Finn said.

“Yep, this morning.” I rubbed my fingers in my eyes. I needed a day or two for the jet lag to wear off. And I was distracted. Jo hadn’t called. I heard a familiar rumble. “Where are you?”

“In the tractor, prepping the fields across the road, the ones we didn’t plant last year. So, how was the trip?”

“Fine, good. Fine.”

“Careful, brother, you’re gushing. What happened?”

I finally took my head out of my ass and got my priorities straight. “The job didn’t work out.”

“What? I thought it was everything you wanted.”

“Yeah, I thought so too. Turns out not so much. How’s the farm? The festival net profit is up this year.”

“O-kay, I’ll let it go, but Mom’s gonna want more,” he said. “So, prepare your speech.”

“Got it. The farm?”

“Farm’s good. But there’s still a Lucas-shaped hole around here.”

“Maybe I should come back.” Might as well put it all out there. I was moving to Perry Harbor. That train was already in motion, but it would be nice to know if my brother wanted my help around the farm.

He paused. “Wait, are you saying what I think you’re saying?” Finn asked.

“What do you think I’m saying?”

“You finally realized that one, you enjoyed working for the farm, and you’re done with all that tech drama. And two, you’re in love with Jo, ass over elbows in love, and you want to spend all your time next to her.”

“That’s what I’m saying.”

“No shit. Really? When are you coming home?” I smiled at the enthusiasm in his tone. That felt good.

“Tomorrow,” I said. I’d finish the job and move after holding Jo, kissing her, and telling her how I felt. “I’m meeting a realtor today to list my apartment.”

“Fuck. You’re serious.”

“What’re the chances Emily would sell me her house?” I asked.

“I’m asking her to marry me at the resort opening next month. If she says yes, I’d say the chances were pretty good.”

“She’ll say yes. You’re a lucky man.”

“I know. You could be too.”

“Yeah, I’m still working out thehowwith Jo,” I said.

“How did you succeed on all those deals?”
