My shoulders deflate as I slump in my chair. “I don’t envy me either. Maybe this is all a shit idea. Why didn’t I choose an easier career like dog walker?”

Mel laughs. “You love your job. It’s just stressful right now. But I’m confidentyou’re making the right decision. If he’s what the company needs, then get him. Make sure you tell him to behave, or he’ll be out of a damn good sponsor and a career.” Mel gives me her best stern look, but since she’s tipsy, her smile is easy to spot underneath.

“The thing is, he’d probably find another deal just as easily. I need to really think about how to sweeten this up and make him think he needs us more than we need him.”

Mel’s eyes flick to something behind me, and her mouth drops open slightly. “Well, you better think fast because he’s standing right over there.”

“What?” I turn around abruptly, making it more than obvious exactly what I’m doing.

He doesn’t notice, though, because his attention is on some blonde draped over one arm.

But that’s him.

I’d recognize him anywhere. I’ve stared at his picture more times than I want to admit.

It’s as if I feel his energy in the room. His confidence, his swagger, everything I can’t stand yet find myself drawn to at the same time.

It’s all there, wrapped up in one sexy as fuck package.

A bead of sweat trickles down my back, and I squirm in my seat, suddenly warm and uncomfortable.

But it’s nothing like what happens when his eyes find mine across the crowded room.

Out of everyone, out of all the people between us, he finds me. He looks atme.

Those dark eyes… pools of darkness... ones I couldfind myself gettinglost in.

My heart takes off like it's joining a race I didn’t know about, and my breath catches in my throat. I’m dizzy as if I’m high, blood rushing through my ears.

He flashes a cockyI know how bad you want mesmirk.

And then he looks away with a smug look on his face like I just wasted his time. All five fucking seconds of it.

I roll my eyes, flip my hair, and spin to face Mel, hoping he knows I don’t give a fuck either. I’m not the one to fall at a man’s feet. Especially men like him. “I knew he was just like the rest. Let’s get out of here.” I take the check and figure out what I owe.

Mel stands and grabs her wallet. Just as she reaches to take her card out, she freezes, her body going stiff.

“Mel, you okay?” I ask, and that’s when I look up.

I find the two eyes I was drowning in mere moments ago, yet this time, there’s no pulling me away. They are way too close.

I sink even deeper.

Luca

“Again,Luc? I don’t know how many more times I can cover for your ass or bail you out of whatever the fuck you got yourself into now.” Jim tosses down this morning’s paper, opening up to the front page of the Sports section.

There’s me with a chick on each arm, coming out of some bar.

LucaDeMello- party animal seen every night at the bar with different women. Howdoes this NASCAR driver keep up? Soon his racing will suffer.

I groan and scrub a hand down my face. “Bullshit. My racing won’t suffer.”

“You don’t know for sure. What if one drunken night turns into one terrible hangover, which turns into a nightmare race? This lifestyle is getting old, and if you want longevity in this career, you need to cut the party boy bullshit.” Jim walks over to where I’m standing and slaps another newspaper down in front of me.

Another headline of me. Same story, different paper. I almost want to laugh.
