But all I see is Neveah. Her gorgeous face. Long, silky hair and soft curves I love to hold.

She staystherein my vision as the first lap begins.

Faster, faster, faster.

Neveah, I miss you.

Weave, drift, weave, drift.

I miss you…

BAM!

Nothing but darkness.

Neveah

"Aren’tyou glad you came? Get out of the house, have delicious drinks.” Mel raises her champagne flute to mine and we clink glasses before taking our first sips.Ahh. Perfect.Who says mimosas are only for breakfast?

“Nope, only came because I love you.” I pop a piece of fruit in my mouth from the Tupperware container Mel brought. She’s already on her way to being a great mom.

We’re sitting in our usual front row area, the sun beating down hard today. It’s crazy hot and I’m ready for some air conditioning.

“And that’s what makes you an amazing friend. Soon to be an amazing aunt.”

“Eeek! I can’t wait!” I clap my hands together. “You’ll be adorable with a big pregnant belly.”

Mel groans. “Don’t remind me of that part. Can I skip the pregnancy and just have the baby?”

I laugh. “Ha, you wish.”

“I’ll miss having drinks with you.”

“We’ll still have drinks, girlfriend. Virgin ones. Well, virgin for you at least.” I wink. Maybe I am glad Meg begged me to come. And by begged I mean asked me repeatedly until I said yes. She likes the company and I usually have no issues coming, since I go to a lot of them anyway. But a particular driver I don’t care to see is creating issues.Lots of issues.

“I’m so glad you came, Nev. It’s not the same without you here. And you know, we always have so much fun.”

“Yeah yeah, give me another piece of mango.” I reach for more fruit, the juicy cold piece refreshing.

The afternoon goes on, and about an hour into the race, Mel’s telling me she finally booked a vacation to Italy. She’s in the middle of describing the villa she rented when I hear it.

The loud bang followed quickly by the crunch of metal and the screams.

And then it’schaos.

Lights flashing, medics running, the crowd watching in horror. It’s like it all happens in slow motion.

Mel grabs my arm, both of us frozen with terror. Is it someone we know?AJ, Mitch, Luca? Why weren’t we paying better attention?

We take one look at each other, and that’s all it takes. We run, pushing through the crowds, dodging shit left and right until we’re down in the pits, moving right through security.

But that’s as far as we can get. We’re not allowed past the pits.

It’s loud and people rush around us, yelling and frantic. Mel clings to me and it feels like fifty years pass when it’s really only five minutes.

Finally. Finally a familiar face comes through the crowd. Mitch runs toward us, and Mel cries out, her reliefevidentas tears stream down her face. “Oh my god, Mitch! What’s going on?” She falls into his arms, her body visibly shaking.
