When it’s time for me to get the cake, I make her wait outside. Grabbing the ring from the back of the cabinet above the stove where I safely hid it earlier, I take a deep breath and close my eyes as I clutch the ring box to me.Here goes nothing.

The cake is chocolate ganache fudge cake topped with chocolate-dipped strawberries. I carefully remove the ring and place it on the strawberry with less chocolate, the bakery having a heads-up when it came to my plans. After setting up the candles, I slide a lighter into my pocket and walk outside. Each step feels like a mile, and I’m afraid my heart is going to give out any second with how fast it’s beating.

“Close your eyes, Nev,” I say as I walk onto the patio. She listens as I place the cake in front of her and light the candles.

“Okay, open.”

Nev’s beautiful eyes pop open, and she breaks out into the happiest of smiles, her entire face lighting up. “Luca, this cake.” She breathes, and I wonder if she sees the ring amid the candles and flames.

“Happy Birthday, baby. Make a wish.” I wink, and she closes her eyes again and blows all the candles out. When she opens her eyes again, I’m down on one knee in front of her.

Her mouth drops open, and she bursts into tears.

Before she can say anything, I speak first. “Look at the cake.”

When she does, she immediately sees the ring, and her hand flies to her mouth. I take it and hold it out to her, my own eyes growing wet with a flood of emotions.

“Neveah Walker, you are the best thing that’s ever happened to me. You showed me what it’s like to live again and most importantly to love. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?”

She stands so fast, her chair falls behind her, but it doesn’t matter. I’m up on my feet just as fast, both of us jumping into the others’ arms as we kiss and cry and hug. All that matters is she said yes.

She said yes.

And now she really is all mine.Forever.
