“Why are you asking me a question that you know the answer to?”

“Cole, it's been long enough. Stop beating yourself up. It's okay to move on and—”

I jump to a stand and stop listening. Rocky hops off Gramps, his tail wagging and his wet tongue swiping at my hand. “Let’s go, Gramps. I need to get dinner in the oven, and Rocky must be starving.”

Gramps sighs and shakes his head. “If only you would stop and listen to me.”

Ignoring his comment, I offer him my arm to help him up the stairs.

Maybe he doesn't get me like I thought he did. He should understand that I couldn't possibly be ready yet, if ever. What I did, what happened was unthinkable and surely unforgivable.

I don't deserve love. And the other person wouldn’t deserve the kind of love I gave out.

Unfortunately, in my drunken haze, I remember agreeing to think about letting her sell her art in my shop in exchange for her help here.

I haven't thought much about it, and I'm not mentioning a thing to anyone yet.

It's a bad idea.

Resisting her all the time?

Won't be easy and I know I'll fuck up.

But I need help at the shop. And if what she's proposing can help us both, then why not try it?

A deep sigh escapes my mouth, and Gramps gives me the side eye.

Fuck, what in the hell should I do?
