~E~

The hot breezerustles my hair. The ocean hasn't cooled the air one bit and as I watch the waves roll in, a part of me wants to strip and dive in.

A few kids frolic on the sand; their parents close by. I tilt my head towards the sun and close my eyes as I breath in the salty sea air.

Knox never answered my call last night. I called three times before giving up and leaving a voicemail. I'm sure I come off as needy and desperate, but at this point, I don't care. I want to know why he's meeting up with Melissa. I deserve answers from both of them.

After waitingfor an hour, I texted him to meet me by the beach in the city at four o'clock. He never respondedbut here I sit and wait.

I glance at my phone to see it's now four and he should be arriving any minute.

No one knows I'm here. Sarah and Abbie told me to let it go for now, but I couldn't. They advised me not to call Knox if Melissa wouldn't tell me anything.

I tried to heed their advice. After our long lunch turned into drinks and pedicures, they dropped me off half-lit and ready to tell someone off.

They should've known I wouldn't listen.

I wring my hands together and shake my knee. The time now reads 4:07 and Knox is nowhere in sight.

I should've known he wouldn't show. Hell, he couldn't even answer me back.

My stomach sinks at the realization that I've been played. I fell for his good looks and his charm, and now look where I end up.Broken rules and broken spirit.

Another fifteen minutes pass and I gather my things. I'm not wasting anymore time waiting around.

"Emma?" A deep voice rumbles beside me.

I look up and there he is, his handsome face inches from mine. The electricity buzzes between us and I'm caught off guard as I stare at him. He's grown his beard in more and, Goddamn, does it look sexier than ever. His deep brown eyes with the gold flecks hold me in place.

"Mind if I sit next to you?"

His words bring me out of my fog, and I nod as I slide across the bench to make room. You can do this, Em. Get what you came for.

"I'm sorry I never answered your text. My phone was acting up. Which is why I'm late. I've been trapped in the damned phone store all day."

"What was wrong?"

Knox shrugs as he tucks his phone into his cargo shorts pocket. "They couldn't figure it out. I ended up with a new one for free."

Silence falls over us as I work up the nerve to ask him my burning question.

Our chemistry is strong today; it's like I could reach out and touch it, the connection palpable.

"Want to go for a walk?" Knox breaks the connection as he stands.

"Sure." I stand and follow Knox's lead as he heads for the walkway down by the water.

"Knox..." I trail off as I debate the best way to ask him. Hey, why were youwith my sister? You know she's a crazy bitch who loves to make my life a living hell.

"Knox? Is that you?" A loud nasal voice shouts and my eyes follow to where a woman and a man stand a few yards away.

Why does that man look familiar?

I squint my eyes as they come closer, the glare from the sun in my way, when it suddenly dawns on me who it is.

Max. Shit, shit, shit!
