“We were too close to the bar already,” he said, swallowing thickly. “Besides, there’s always tonight.”

“There is,” I breathed, my throat bobbing as electricity hummed through me.

I almost wanted to say fuck it and drive back now, but we needed this, to unwind, to have some fun, before the fun we’d have tonight.

Aswestrodein, the bar seemed a little less crowded than it had the other night, Spade’s arm casually slung around my shoulders. We paused by the bar, and I scanned the tables.

Some of the tension in my chest eased as I remembered that these were their men, only the people they trusted. I still couldn’t shake the thought niggling in the back of my mind that someone would tell Tommaso I was here. But all these people were part of the force that attacked the engagement party—if they hadn’t ratted the guys out then they surely wouldn’t now.

“I have to go to my office for a second, but I’ll be right back,” Merrick murmured, his fingers threading through my hair. He drew me closer without pulling me away from Spade, and my lips tilted up to meet his in a searing kiss. His tongue trailed over the seam of my lips, before he pulled back and grumbled something under his breath.

“Don’t worry I’ll take good care of her.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Merrick groaned, and scrubbed a hand over his face.

“An adult is here to watch over them, don’t worry.” Kellan chuckled, sidling up to my other side and nudging Merrick out of the way.

“Where?” Merrick huffed out on a breath of annoyance, shaking his head before he went behind the bar and to the backroom he’d come out of the last time I was here.

“You know he’s staking his claim, right?” Spade whispered conspiratorially like he was telling me something I didn’t already know. I looked up and a few of the guys at a table closest to us ducked their heads as though they could somehow hide the fact that they’d been staring.

“I know,” I whispered back, and a mischievous grin stretched across his face. “Just like you’ve been doing since the moment we walked in here.”

He sucked in a sharp gasp in mock offense to the truth. “Me? Never,” he said with faux innocence, clasping his other hand over his chest.

“Don’t play dumb.” I chuckled. “Kellan is the only one who’s behaved since we walked in.”

“Will I get rewarded for that later?” He smirked, wrapping a hand around my waist and pulling me closer to his side.

“I take it back,” I groaned, feigning annoyance.

“Well this looks fun.” My eyes flew toward the feminine voice that came from behind the bar. “I didn’t mean to interrupt, that was entertaining.”

I couldn’t help the smile that stretched across my lips as I saw the bartender, Evelyn, from the first time I was here. The petite woman slung a cloth over her shoulder and propped her hands on her hips she watched the three of us.

“It is fun,” Spade exclaimed beside me, and placed a kiss on my cheek. I couldn’t help the heat that bloomed there from the sweet gesture.

“I’m glad it looks like everything’s worked out for you,” she said, holding my gaze. The words were light yet there was real concern in the look she gave me. I wouldn’t forget how she stood close that night we met, uncertain whether she should leave me alone with Merrick with the rage that rolled off him.

“Everything worked out better than I ever could’ve imagined.” I beamed back.

“Well then, what can I get for you?” she asked, her answering smile just as bright as mine.

“I’m scared,” Spade said in a half-assed attempt at a whisper.

My gaze flashed to him, and my senses went on high alert.

Kellan seemed to sense my unease as he rubbed his hand over the curve of my hip, helping to soothe me.

“I’ve never seen Eve smile before. I’m not sure whether she’s having a stroke or you’re some sort of witch,” Spade responded, cringing as Eve bared her teeth at him, the look much more sinister than the smile that stretched across her face just moments before. He shuddered in response, letting out a dramatic small oomph as I tapped his stomach.

“You have guts girl, I’ve never seen someone hit Spade before and live to tell the tale,” Eve huffed out on a breath of amusement, but nodded slightly in respect. “Some say he’s a psycho.”

A rumble left Spade’s chest and he sucked in a breath, about to slam her with his retort, but I cut him off. “He might be a psycho, but he’s my psycho.”

“Fuck,” Spade groaned, before his hand gently tugged my chin toward him and his lips devoured mine. His gratitude for my claiming words was evident with each stroke of his tongue as he delved between my lips.

“Don’t mind me then,” Kellan murmured, his hand slipping from my waist.
