SIX

~ Zane ~

I saw red.

I hadn’t expected to see Seth when I turned the corner, much less him grabbing Elina. I could tell by her facial expression that she didn’t want him there, and I was more than happy to see her wish fulfilled. Just the thought of her being in pain made my blood boil, and I knew that if he hadn’t let go that second, I would have caused some severe damage to his face. Seth took a step back and squared up to me, his eyes narrowing.

“Zane? What are you doing here?” he turned to Elina, “Were you expecting him?”

Color had started to return to her face as she shook her head, “I didn’t have anything planned, but it doesn’t matter. He’s allowed to show up whenever he wants. Unlike you. You shouldn’t be here.”

Silently in my head, I cheered for her. It was great to see her standing up to the man that had caused her so much pain in her life. The undeserving scumbag that stood in front of me at this moment. Slowly, I unclenched my fist, but I could feel the indents from where my nails had carved into my palm.

“You need to leave,” I moved closer to Elina.

“She’s still my wife,” Seth growled, “Or have you forgotten? I knew you were just waiting for me to be out of the picture before you made your move. I bet you two have been sleeping together for years.”

I couldn’t help but laugh, “Are you serious? Are you going to accuse Elina of cheating after everything you’ve done? She’s been nothing but faithful, and you dare to show your face around here? I’ll have you knocked out on the floor before you ever lay a hand on her again.”

Elina moved in closer to me, and I put my arm around her back. I knew it must have been difficult to see her soon-to-be ex-husband appearing out of the blue, and I could tell she was just putting on a brave face. I needed to get Seth out of here before she was pushed over the edge.

“I’d like to see you try,” he snarled, “You may be a couple of years younger, but I’ve got the experience. You can’t just sneak in and take another man’s property.”

I was shocked. Never had I heard someone call a woman his property. I never realized how hard it must have been for Elina to put up with such an asshole for so long.

“I’m not your property,” she snapped, “I never was and never will be. As soon as that divorce paperwork is finalized, I want nothing else to do with you. I can’t wait to sever all ties with you.”

Seth took a step forward and I quickly maneuvered myself in front of Elina. I would fight to my dying breath to keep her safe, to hell with the consequences. He must have seen the determination in my eyes as he shuffled back slightly. I could feel Elina’s hand gripping tightly onto my forearm. I knew she was scared despite her poker face, and I hated that she felt that way.

“You’ll always be a Young,” he said.

This seemed to produce a smile from Elina, “Actually, I won’t. The divorce paperwork may be taking a while but changing my last name didn’t. I’m back to being Elina Miller. Never to be a Young again.”

Seth looked disgusted, “Are you really going to pretend our marriage didn’t happen at all?”

“No,” she spoke calmly, “I’m not a child. I’ll admit we had some good times, but it was through your actions that forced us apart. I’m moving on with my life now, a new chapter, and you’re not part of it. I would appreciate it if you didn’t show up here again, and if you don’t leave, I’ll call the police.”

“You wouldn’t dare call the police on your own husband.”

Now it was my turn to take a step forward, “If she doesn’t, then I will.”

Seth looked like he was about to say something but must have seen how serious I was. Instead, he took the smarter decision to back down and cut his losses while he still could. As he walked down the pathway, he turned to face us one last time.

“This isn’t over, Elina. You haven’t seen the last of me yet!”
