TEN

~ Samuel ~

Since our night at the swimming pool, I hadn’t seen her, yet she never left my mind for more than a few minutes. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined having sex with Aria Taylor, let alone how amazing it was. Every time I even pictured it, I was rock hard.

I had to have more.

However, the weekend brought time at the church. Despite our usual Saturday mass, mom insisted I bring Aria along on Sunday. I had a bad feeling that my mother had something planned, but I could hardly say no to her after the look of anticipation on her face. I had texted Aria the night before and, when I went around to get her on Sunday morning, she was waiting outside for me.

“Hey stranger,” I smiled, leaning in to kiss her on the cheek.

Her body tensed at my touch, and I knew something was wrong. Before I had a chance to question it, my mom came hurtling around the corner.

“We had better get going. I don’t want to miss out on the good seats.”

Aria smiled at the sight of my mom, and I thought it best not to ruin the moment. Mom decided to sit in the back next to Aria while I drove. Turning the radio down low, I listened in on their conversation as we headed to the church.

“So, how’s my son treating you?”

“Good. He’s as much a gentleman as he ever was, Maya. You should be proud.”

“I’m certainly proud now he has a beautiful, smart, young lady by his side. You two make the cutest couple. All the women at church say so.”

“That’s lovely. It was so great getting to see them the other day over dinner.”

“Well, I know they were thrilled to see you two. You have blossomed into such a wonderful lady. We’ll have to arrange something again soon.”

Glancing in the rearview mirror, I could tell this wasn’t something Aria was looking forward to. I wondered whether she would even be in the country when that was next organized. I still hadn’t got around to asking her timeframe for keeping in our fake relationship. All I knew was that I didn’t want her to go.

“St. Catherine’s Church. I wish your mom were here to join us. We always prayed together.”

After parking, I helped my mom out of the car. Aria joined us, and Maya latched onto her. It was wonderful to see how happy my mom was around Aria. I knew she thought of Kelly and Aria as her own daughters. Delilah and Maya often took turns looking after us, hence why it was so easy to fall into a relationship with Aria. We were raised together. We knew everything about one another.

At least I used to.

This indescribable darkness lingered around Aria, even as we took our seat on one of the front pews. Mom’s friends, excited by her presence, leaned in to greet us. It wasn’t until the priest started the mass that they finally quieted down and gave us some peace. Looking across at Aria, I could see that she wasn’t focused on the sermon, her mind clearly elsewhere. I wish I could have known what she was thinking. I didn’t like to see her in pain. When the service came to an end, mom dragged us both straight up to the front. The priest’s face lit up at the sight of us, and I guessed that mom had been talking to him. Taking a deep breath, I wondered what was about to be thrown our way.

The priest clasped his hands in front of him, “So, I heard you two are getting married.”
