EPILOGUE

~ Amanda ~

I knew St. Catherine’s Church well. It was the same church where I had buried my mother. Walking through the graveyard, it was eerily quiet.

I stopped by the gravestone engraved with James Banks' name. It was clearly well looked after and had fresh flowers laid in front. I wondered whether I had just missed seeing the couple from my latest hit column piece. The thought of Aria and Sam kneeling together at his father’s grave just reminded me of my own loss. Walking past, I made my way to my mom’s grave.

Too young. She died too young.

But cancer takes no prisoners. I laid the flowers down on front and stroked the stone surface. I wished my mom could see me now, see the success I had made from my talent. She had always urged me to keep at it. She was my biggest supporter from day one. The bitter irony was that she was the only one who didn’t get to see what came of it. I owed my career to that great woman, and it hurt to know that I couldn’t thank her in person.

“I love you, mom,” I murmured, dropping my head low.

It was at this point I heard the sobbing. I turned to look at a woman sobbing at a gravestone with a man holding her. At first, I thought it was husband and wife, but then I saw the uncertain look in the man’s eyes as she moved in closer to him. Whatever their relationship, it was clear that he was attracted to her. I just hoped he wasn’t taking advantage of her in her delicate state. Kneeling down, I decided to give them their privacy as I stayed by my mom’s grave, whispering to her the stories I had covered over the last few months. I knew that she would have enjoyed hearing about all the crazy love stories that people had submitted. After about half an hour, my legs had gone stiff, and I was just about ready to go. As I stood up, I noticed the woman and man had gone. Curious, I crept over to the gravestone they had previously occupied.
