One of the women grabbed onto my arm, “And keep it a secret? But this is great news. I’m sure the father will be able to shift some things around for a June wedding.”

Now Aria was as white as a ghost. I knew this was more than she had signed up for, and it was piling on at increasing speed.

“I haven’t even asked her to marry me, Lynne. Please, we really should be going. Aria has things she needs to do at home.”

“Nonsense. We were her mother’s church as much as we are your mothers. To hear two of our greatest are back together must be shared.”

Shakingly, Aria pulled her arm from my mom’s grip. I could tell from her distraught face she was barely keeping it together as she tried to utter her goodbyes. Grabbing my arm, she pulled me to the side.

“I didn’t mind keeping up this sham for your mom, but I can’t do it to my community. Maya would have already called my mom, and there’s going to be loads of questions. Now it’s going to be the gossip of Cherrywood Falls.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know she was going to tell everyone. I can make this right…,” I tried to plead, but it fell on deaf ears.

“Enough,” she interrupted, “I need to go home. I’m glad you’re okay, but I need to get away from this. I can’t lie anymore.”

Turning on her heel, she practically ran from the church. I could hear the gaggle of ladies gossiping behind us, and I knew they would be trying to dissect the public show we just put on. Sighing, I sat down on the nearest pew and waited for my mom to finish up.

As far as I knew, I had just blown it with Aria Taylor.
