“No closer, trow.” He squeezes Andrea’s throat a little tighter, but he hasn’t bitten her. “Drop the ax, ride home to Fairy, and forget about the halfling.”

I drop the ax, but I will not forget about Andrea. She is my mate. I have claimed her. The smoke thickens, coiling over the ceiling of the house.

Andrea lifts her hand.

“Shhh.” His nails dig into her neck, drawing blood. “Don’t do anything stupid, halfling. No more magic.”

I still have my knife. It’s all I need to kill him. “How are you getting out of here?”

The vampire’s gaze darts to the broken door and the flaming curtains. I wouldn’t chance it. If he’s smart, he’ll leave via the front door. But there’ll be too many people all watching the door, witnessing as he kidnaps Andrea. I’m sure there’s another exit, but I don’t know where it is, and I doubt he does either.

Andrea is watching me. His nails have drawn blood on her neck and the beads roll over her skin like rubies. He won’t kill her; she is more valuable to him alive. If he keeps her alive, he can feed on her for months.

He just wants me to think he’s going to kill her.

I move to the side as if I’m going to let him pass. When he takes a step, Andrea stumbles and trips him. Her elbow catches him in the balls.

I wince on his behalf. She’s very accurate when attacking balls.

He folds and she pushes him, sending him crashing to the ground right in front of me. I drop my knee to his chest and slice through his throat. He gasps but is dead before he can exhale.

Andrea brings a candle over. “Fire gets rid of the bodies, right?”

“Yes.” I stand and take the candle from her so she doesn’t have to clean up my mess. This has been a bad hunt. Too much mess. Too much blood. Too many people have seen too much, but there’s nothing I can do about that. I drop the candle, and the vampire’s body is consumed immediately in few bright seconds.

Two are dust, and one is headless and will be gone in the morning.

“What’s wrong with your arm?”

I look at my arm, to where she is pointing. Black lines have spread down my arm from the bite. “The vampire poison is spreading.”

“There must be something we can do to stop it. What will happen if we don’t stop the spread?” She checks her hand as though expecting black lines to have appeared, but she is fine.

“It is a rot that will weaken me, and kill me, if I do not return to fairy.” If she had been poisoned it would have weakened her, making her the perfect submissive victim.

She pulls off her shirt so she is wearing only the undergarment around her breasts, and skirt. “Let me bind the bite so it doesn’t spread.”

I don’t think it will make much difference, but I let her wrap my upper arm tightly.

“I’m sorry for kneeing you before. I was panicking.”

“I noticed. There’s no easy way to tell you, and no time for the news to settle.”

She nods. “I don’t want to hurt people or destroy the world.”

“I know. It’s time for us to leave. People will come because of the fire.” Fire always draws help, that was true of the human and fairy worlds. I pick up my ax and slide it home. Around us the fire crackles. “My job is to save the human world from fairy magic that doesn’t belong here.” I draw in a breath, preparing to defend myself in case she tries to knee me in the balls again. “Will you come with me and be my mate?”

Andrea

Be his mate.

He never mentioned that. Though, when was the right time? While we were fucking or killing? I stare at Kov’s bloodied hand and the black markings that streak his arm. I could run again, but I might run straight into the arms of another vampire.

Now that I know about them, I’m sure they know about me. And if I flee, next time I won’t have Kov to save me because he needs to return home.

I breathe in the smoky air of the fire I made by feeding the candles more air. I felt the air dance at my fingertips, allowing me to play with the currents and move them to do my bidding. Magic. I used magic. And by using it, I may have already damaged this world.
