She shook her head, turning away from him, and started down the hallway. “Which room am I in?”

He grabbed her shoulder, stopping her. “You need to tell me this instant.”

She refused to turn around to him. “It is nothing, Rafe. Please, I just need a bed. That is all you see in me.”

His fingers dug into her shoulder. “No, you need to tell me what is going on. We can stand out here all night if that is what it takes.”

Her right fingers twitched back and forth, aggravated, but she didn’t look back at him. “I didn’t feel it until today.”

“What?” His hand dropped from her shoulder and he moved around her in the tight space, glaring down at her. “Tell me what it is.”

Her look shifted off of him toward the wall, her feet fidgeting.

“Now.”

Her eyes snapped back up to him, then fell to the floor between them as a sigh lifted her shoulders. “It is the glass shards.”

“Glass? From where?”

“The carriage. When it almost overturned. The windows broke and glass flew everywhere. Some of it got into my skin.”

“Where is it?”

“My arm.”

“Where?”

She glanced up at him, then pointed to the back of her upper left arm. He couldn’t see anything of her arm under the heavy grey cloak he’d bought her a day ago.

But he could see her face.

“And?” He could already tell what her face looked likewhen she was hiding something. Her right brow quirked up on the outer edge and the left side of her lips pulled back just enough to make a tiny dimple appear.

Could everyone read this woman like he could? She would be disastrous in a card room.

She puffed out an annoyed exhale. “And what?”

“And where else?”

Her head dropped, her face hiding from him as tiny words croaked out. “My leg.”

“Where on your leg?”

A pause. A long pause. She was fighting this even though she knew she wouldn’t win.

He cleared his throat.

“On the back of my thigh.”

Her thigh? How in the hell had glass embedded into her thigh?

“How high up?”

Her jaw shifted to the side, even as her head stayed bowed. “High. When the carriage nearly overturned then slammed into the ground it was violent and my skirts got jammed far up my side. I landed on shards. I tried to pick out all the glass this morning before we left.”

Hell, she rode the whole day and the day before with glass embedded into her thigh?

His hand lifted involuntarily, cupping the side of her neck. She didn’t pull away from the touch. If anything, she leaned into it. “And you weren’t successful?”
