The desire she’d experienced before paled in comparison with the white-hot flames licking her body now, as Adrian’s kiss rushed through her. Firm lips pressed against hers... His arms wrapped around her—thank goodness, because she was about to melt to the floor.

No previous kiss could even be described as a real kiss anymore. All the chaste pecks and several very dissatisfying attempts at making out faded as Adrian’s tongue teased the seam of her lips. She gasped and arched against him, wantonly pressing her feverish body against him.

Each sensuous stroke of his tongue, the tightening of his arms around her waist, the throbbing need growing between her thighs—all of it took her to new heights. The hard press of his erection against her belly emboldened her. She tangled her fingers in his thick hair and moaned. She wanted him closer, naked, inside her—oh, dear God, please, inside her...

“Everleigh...Dios mío.”

The ragged edge in his voice spurred her on. She brazenly pressed her hips against his, thrilled at how he grew evenharder. He fisted one hand in her hair as he continued to shatter her reality with his incredible kisses. His other hand drifted down, fingers blazing a hot trail down her neck, over her collarbone, then lower still.

Sensation exploded in blazing stars as he cupped her breast. No one had ever touched her like this—so intimately, and yet with such tenderness it brought tears to her eyes.

“Adrian...”

She breathed his name, ready for the next step, ready to rip his shirt off and run her hands over his bare chest. Maybe, if her confidence continued, she’d even let her hands drift lower to the button on his jeans and—

He released her and stepped back. The loss of the support of his body sent her stumbling against a wine rack. The bottles clinked and swayed, but thankfully none of them tumbled to the floor.

“Are you all right?”

She looked up. Adrian reached out a hand to steady her, but when he saw that she’d caught her balance he took a step back. His hair was disheveled, his shirt wrinkled and mussed. But there was nothing in his face to indicate that he had practically made love to her in one phenomenal, mind-blowing kiss.

“Everleigh?”

She jerked and dragged her gaze from his lips up to his eyes. His cold eyes. No heat, no desire. Just chips of blue ice, regarding her with detachment.

“Um...yes, I’m—I’m fine,” she stammered as she tried to pull the reins on her racing thoughts.

What the hell had just happened?

Had she imagined their kiss?

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Dread curled around her heart and twisted viciously. “For what?”

No, please don’t say it.

“For kissing you.” He slid his hands into his jeans pockets. “That was inappropriate. I’m going to be your boss.”

Shock rendered her speechless. Had that just been a normal occurrence for him? To kiss a woman and then just stop—shut it off as if he had flipped a damn switch? Or had she done something wrong? She was a virgin, sure, but he’d responded with such intensity...

“I...” She swallowed hard and focused on the last thing he’d said. “I agree. Entirely inappropriate. Thank you for putting a stop to it before we did something we’d both regret.”

His eyes stayed trained on hers, hard and unreadable. A part of her had hoped he might disagree, or say that, while it wasn’t a good idea, he wanted her as much as she wanted him.

But no. Nothing. Nothing but horrible, humiliating silence.

Embarrassment stung her cheeks and swept downwards, engulfing her body in a wave of shame that made her want to sink into the floor.

She should have pushed him away. She should have slapped him. Anything but respond like a virgin desperate for the slightest display of affection.

She pasted a small smile to her face. “Six a.m. Sleep well, Mr. Cabrera.”

Before he could respond, she turned and walked up the stairs. Each step was precise, measured, designed to show him she could be just as unaffected as him.

She wouldn’t let him see the mortification that nipped at her heels, nor the entirely unreasonable yet deep hurt that had broken off another piece of her heart.
