“I’m not this nice to anyone else.”

“I don’t believe that. You’ve been kind and generous towards me from the moment we met! And everybody likes you, even X!”

“Well, I can’t deny that a male as impressive andhandsomeas myself makes friends easily,” I said with a grin. “And yes, I do try to share goodness and happy conversation with all those whom I meet. But you...” I let my hand trail down the side of her face, drawing my thumb along her chin. “You’ve been the recipient of special attention. All my attention, as of late.”

My hand grew firmer against her face, and my tone dropped lower, all joking gone.

“You should know,” I said, the words coming out in a commanding rumble, “that once you’re settled here and the shop is open, I intend to woo you within an inch of your gorgeous human life.”

Maggie’s breath caught, and a tremor ran through her, shivering under my hand.

I dipped my head, my nose brushing hers, my words fanning across her parted lips.

“So prepare yourself for that, Maggie. For me.”

I straightened, and with some difficulty, removed my hand from her skin.

“Goodnight,” I said. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Right,” she breathed, nodding slowly. “Night, Archie.”

I spun on my heel and left the shop.

It was only with a great exertion of will that I did not turn back.

CHAPTER NINE

Maggie

Today was the lastday of preparations before the shop opened, and despite the insanely pressing nature of that fact, all I could think about was fucking Archie. God, that phrase was apt. I was thinking about fucking Archie, as inthat fucking orc. But I was also thinking aboutfuckingArchie. And not just thinking about it. Day-dreaming and wet-dreaming about it. Fantasizing about it.

Last night, things had changed between us. I mean, we’d been flirting this entire time. It was obvious there was an attraction there, and the more I got to know him, the more my own feelings had deepened. But things were rocketing forward beyond a casual attraction, now. He’d caressed my cheek like I was something precious. I’d thought he was going to kiss me. I’d ached for him to.

I’m going to woo you within an inch of your gorgeous human life.

Those words sent a hot shiver through me as I stepped aboard the hover-vator the morning of the 22nd. There was no mistaking the intent in that phrase. He wanted to make me his.
