“Rorke hasn’t given me any details yet. All I know is that I’m expected in Brussels in thirty-two hours.”

“Okay. Keep your powder dry and call if you need backup.”

“Always.”

He pushed himself to his feet. “If you happen to see Miles out there, can you keep an eye on him?”

“Of course.” Kane crossed his arms. “Is there anything I should be concerned about?”

“I’m not sure. He stopped by the other day and said something about the transition away from the Teams being harder than anticipated.”

“Is he operational?”

“Yes. We worked together for years; I have no reason to believe he’s not.”

“So the being at home part has him flailing?”

“That’s my guess.”

“Makes sense.” He nodded. “Did you tell him how you found a way to make the transition?”

“Of course. And I’m hoping he’ll be open to it when the time is right.” He pulled his brother into an embrace. “Love you, man. Call me when you’re headed home.”

“Of course.”

He watched Kane stride toward the door and wondered when he would be ready to stay home and start the next chapter of his life. It didn’t appear that he was anywhere near, but that didn’t mean fate wouldn’t intervene and put someone in his path that would make it impossible to leave.

FIFTEEN

Tancy laid a piece of tissue paper over a leprechaun and heard the rumble of Teague’s truck. “Why is he backing it into my driveway?”

She stepped around a stack of plastic boxes and waited until he had the bumper perfectly aligned with the garage door. The man did love symmetry and right angles. “Why is your truck visiting my house?” she called out as he jumped out of his vehicle. Admiring his long-legged stride, she noticed her tummy swishing.

“I have a little surprise.”

Laughing, she held on to his biceps as he swept her into his arms. “There is nothing little about you.”

“True enough.” He gave her a tight squeeze. “What’s the name of that show with all those plastic containers that makes you vibrate with happiness?”

“Home Edit.” She peered around his large frame. “What do you have in the truck.”

“I went to your favorite store, and…”

“You’re not allowed to go to the Container Store without me. That’s a cardinal rule you swore never to break.”

“It doesn’t apply if I’m trying to surprise you.”

“Are you seducing me with plastic boxes and labels?”

“It’s more of a make you fall in love with me gesture that includes a shelving system.” He pulled her against his chest. “How does that sound?”

“So tempting.” She gripped his shirt and pressed their mouths together, appreciating that he kissed with his whole body. “I love seeing this affectionate side of you.”

“Really?” He kissed her one more time and then stepped back. “It’s not too much?”

“Of course not.” She was surprised to see uncertainty filling his gaze. “It makes me feel like leaning in and accepting that this won’t end in disaster.”

“I never considered catastrophe as an option. I assumed we have bumps in the road, maybe even a few interesting twists and turns. But disaster never hit my radar.”
