“Yeah, here in class instead of out there, causing mayhem as, you know, devils do,” Emrys says.

“Emrys,” the teacher says on a sigh, “I’m asking you about the play, not about your pastimes, which frankly I don’t want to know about. Can you tell me about Prospero and—?”

The ringing signaling the end of the class is jarring. It jolts me almost out of my seat.

“Saved by the bell,” the teacher says. “Why doesn’t it surprise me? You have the devil’s luck.”

Chuckling, Emrys gets up and I scramble to escape before he decides to talk to me. I need time. Maybe Melissa and Vanessa have another juicy scoop for me. All I need to do is disseminate a scandalous secret regarding each boy, I tell myself, destroy their reputation, maybe get them kicked out of school, and I’m good. It’d be something, since sending them to jail is out of the question.

Since my cousin’s name is not in the books.

How did they manage that? I wonder as I hurry out of the classroom. That’s some control these rich families have over the Academy, to erase Ophelia like that, covering up for their sons’ crimes.

Was the girl that Jason killed erased, too?

I feel sick to my stomach thinking of that. I have to talk to Jason, confirm it. Will he be honest with me, though?

If I help them, he’ll owe me. I could use these favors to ask my questions, but the problem is, they don’t have to be honest. Who is going to check?

And why do I keep feeling like a bitch for seeking to mete out justice?

“Mia, wait!” I turn to find Emrys coming after me, his gang of demons following behind. “Mia!”

“What for?” I walk faster. “We said all we had to say.”

“Dammit, slow down. Mia.” Suddenly, his hands are on me, spinning me around to face him.

“Get off me.” I shove at him but he doesn’t budge. His chest is hard like granite, and his eyes are dark, so dark I fall into them, drowning. “What do you want?”

“I have something for you,” he says. “Come with me.”

“No way. Is that a trick to get me inside your room?”

“You’ve been inside my room already.”

“Rys…”

“Let me show you,” he says more softly. His mouth tilts in a grin that makes my heart pound. “It’s a gift.”

A gift? The word echoes inside my head. Why would he…? What sort of thing…?

“I need to talk to Ashton and Jason,” I whisper. “Need to have their promise that they’ll owe me if I help you.”

“All in good time. Now come.” He reaches for my hand. His grip is hard and sends a ripple of sensation through me. A ripple of want.

I shouldn’t go with him. I should resist more.

But one thing I’m learning with these boys is that it doesn’t matter whether it’s a terrible idea or not. I can’t help myself when it comes to them.

It’sstrange to be back in his room with all those shiny weapons on the walls, including the flog. At least it doesn’t look as if he’s moved them, taken them down to use them.

Then again, maybe he’s just tidy with his things. What do I know?

I try very hard not to think of how he’d use that flog…

“Why would you get me a gift after telling everyone about what happened in the bathroom?” I walk around his room, trail my fingertips over his desk. It’s empty but for an empty bottle of whiskey and what looks like a pillbox. And a package.

“That… has nothing to do with my gift. I wanted them to know.”
