I open my mouth to set him right and realize he’s not wrong. “That’s not the point, I—”

“You won’t know until you try, right?”

I sigh. “Why are you trying to please me? You don’t need to buy me off. I already told all of you that I will try to help you. I need time—”

“How long do you think an order from a shop takes to reach the school?” he says.

“Huh?”

His gray eyes glimmer. “Do you really think that I ordered these clothes yesterday, after you promised to help us, and they were already there five minutes later?”

“Um. I don’t know?”

“It takes at least a day, and that’s not the store’s fault, it’s because time runs slightly differently inside the Academy due to the surplus of magic emanating from the students.” He rolls one shoulder in a shrug. “The same way the net most times doesn’t work and so many gadgets break down. Our magic slows down time.”

I blink. “Oh. So when did you order these clothes?”

“A few days ago.” He steps closer. “I wanted to see you dressed in the clothes I chose for you. It’s a guy thing. Don’t question it.”

“You dress up all the girls you meet?”

“Only the ones who are really sexy and have read many books. Not many of those around, to be honest.”

My mouth is dry. “That so?”

“Yeah.” His gaze dips, raking over my body. “What are you? I can’t figure you out. You’re this enigma, this pretty question mark. You seem to hate us but also keep coming to our aid. You’re a witch but I didn’t taste magic in your blood. And yet I felt it yesterday.”

“Well, that’s weird,” I say.Weird to feel something that isn’t there, but I don’t say that. Let him think what he wants. “Now if you’ll excuse me,” I clutch his package to my chest, “I have a rendezvous with books.”

“So many books, so little time.”

“Something like that,” I whisper.

“Sure you don’t want my help to find the right books to—”

I shake my head. “I got it. Promise to ask for help if I need it.”

“Remember that time—”

“—is short. I know. You told me.”

His grin grows faint. “Great. I’ll leave you to it, then.”

“Yeah. Thanks for…” I lift the package. “For this.”

“I hope you like the clothes.” He turns to go. “We still have to meet up with the others and discuss our findings. I’ll continue with my own research. We’ll compare notes later.”

God.I watch him go, the confident, easy strides of his long legs, the impressive set of his shoulders, the muscular ass.

The ass I shouldn’t be checking out.

I think I’m going crazy. I’m too shy and yet I want to be with all four boys—kiss them, touch them, have them kiss and touch me back. I don't think I’m pretty, but I get cocky when they’re around and I wore the sexy clothes Zoey gave me as if I had all the confidence in the world. I have no clue about the world, but I trust that I’ll take my revenge and leave from here with time to spare.

It’s as if the repression I experienced growing up is a lock that’s now lying broken, in pieces. I’m not such a good girl—though the endless hours of prayer and punishment should have been a hint, in retrospect. I’m certainly not a saint or angel.

Demonic blood or not, I seem to have an affinity for these creatures unlike any I’d ever imagined. I never fit in with my adoptive family. Here I don’t either—but it’s as if parts of me do, and it feels better than I could ever hope.
