“So this bitchy Queen will gather her familiars, suck up the magic, and then… Oh nice. Closing the circle will give the Queen Witch enormous power, thereby upsetting the balance. She will need a counterbalance to stop the world from falling into chaos, blah blah… The new Queen will have the power to change the laws that govern us and… What in the holy fuck?” His face pales. “Fucking shit.”

“What is it, Rys? What does it say? What did you read?”

“The bitch will wreck the world.”

“Like it happened hundreds of years ago,” I whisper. “But the world didn’t end. The witches failed. This one, if this is what’s happening… she’ll fail, too. Right?”

“I’m nobody’s goddamnfamiliar,” he spits. “Fuck her.”

“You assume all this applies to you.”

“Doesn’t it?” he says more softly, snapping the book closed. “We have to tell the others. Come on. Let’s go wake those lazy-asses up and see what other surprises this little book is hiding…”

“Bad witch makesa big entrance and wants to take over the world,” Sindri says. “That’s nothing new.”

I pretend not to notice his presence, or you know, his low voice, or the way he’s sprawled all sexy elegance on top of Jason’s bed, black and blue hair curling at his temples.

“Shut up, Sindri,” Ashton mutters. “Conduits, huh?”

“So, what does that mean?” I demand.

“The four elements,” Ashton murmurs, brow creasing in thought.

“We knew about the Queen and the moon,” Sindri says. “We know a Queen rises once in a while and tries to take over the world. Like I said: nothing new there.”

“Yeah, keep dissing her find,” Emrys snarls. “I’ll rearrange your pretty face, fucker.”

“I’m not dissing it,” Sindri says. “Magical books don’t let themselves be found by chance. It wanted you to find it. If it confirms what we know, well, that means we’re on the right track.”

“Hear, hear,” Ashton mutters. “Though, giving books human personality traits like—”

“Until you get in touch with your elemental side, Ashton,” Sindri says coldly, “I suggest you listen to me. All of you were trained in demonblood magic. Maybe you were tortured through it, too, it wouldn’t surprise me. But none of you were plunged into elemental magic and left to swim or drown in it like me.”

“Ha,” Jason mutters. “Take that, vampire.”

“Screw you, mutt,” Ashton shoots back but without much conviction.

“You two, shut it,” Emrys says. “We need to find out more about this Golden Moon and bitch Queen business. I have a really fucking bad feeling about this.”

“No shit,” Jason mutters. “Sindri, what are you thinking?”

Sindri gives a distracted half-smile. “If this Queen is looking for elemental magic sources, for familiars, and our magic has been unleashed, it’s too much of a coincidence and I don’t believe in coincidences unless they’re bad ones.”

“So what,” Ashton says, “you think we were shot at by this Queen who is looking for us? A Queen Witch who is into archery, or what?”

“Stranger things have happened,” Sindri says.

Ashton frowns. “Really? Not to me.”

“Then, fucker,” Emrys mutters, “you’ve led a damn boring life.”

Bitchy Queen Witches don’t shock me. Nothing much shocks me, to be honest, not after the childhood I’ve had, and talking to Mia about it, even in passing, has brought back all the unwelcome memories, all the goddamn pain I’ve been trying to drown in booze and pills.

Why the fuck did I show her my scars?
