“You talked to Melissa, though.”

Crap. She won’t talk about what I’ve been asking them in front of Emrys, right?

Glancing back, I see that Emrys has pulled on his black jeans, at least. “Yeah, I was… just checking on her. So, what’s up?”

“I wanted to see if you’re coming to the party tonight, and… Oh, hello, handsome.” She does the squirrel thing where she leans to the side and pokes her head inside to check Emrys out. “Didn’t know you had company. You should have said.”

Emrys lifts a brow at her and folds his arms over his inked chest. His still very bare chest, which derails all my thoughts.

“A party,” I repeat, dumbly. “I don’t know, I…”

Vanessa huffs. “The boys will be there. Won’t you, Emrys?”

“Sure,” he says.

When this sinks in, I glare at him. “You were going to this party tonight and didn’t tell me? All of you?”

He shrugs, his face inscrutable.

Vanessa’s face, when I turn back to her, is even more opaque. “Right. So… I should leave you two love bunnies to it.”

I grit my teeth. “We’re not love b—”

“Keep your nose out of my business, Vanessa,” Emrys growls, coming to stand beside me, just inside the door, looking down his nose at Vanessa.

“Whoa.” I shove at his muscular shoulder. “She’s my friend.”

“No, she’s not.”

“Rys!”

“Why is everyone so blind,” he mutters. “All Vanessa wants is to see me and the others go down in flames.”

“Then maybe you shouldn’t have steeped your soul in darkness, demon,” she whispers back.

I frown at her. “Van, now is not the time—”

“— to tell you Emrys has killed someone in the past?” she says. “Or does it surprise you?”

“Van, what are you doing?” My ears are buzzing, my heart slamming about in my chest. My God, he wasn’t supposed to know, she wasn’t supposed to say anything in front of him.

“Giving you important information.” She lifts her chin. “Since you seem to have lost your head and gotten all chummy with demon boy here.”

Then her words sink in, and I turn to Emrys, expecting him to deny it, but his mouth is a flat line.

“Is it true you killed someone?” I demand. I don’t know why I feel like crying. Maybe because I let him get so close to me, in every sense of the word. Because I had hoped I was wrong, on all accounts.

“She’s right,” he finally says. “Does it surprise you, Mia? Isn’t this what you expected of me?”

Cold rushes through me. “Rys…”

“I’ll let you two work this out. See ya.” Vanessa gives us a cheeky wave and a grin and takes off toward the stairs.

“You went to her for information onus?” Emrys growls softly, his teeth looking sharper than before, his irises turning vertical. “Was that what you talked to Melissa about?”

Oh God, this is all falling apart. “Wait, Rys…”

“Was anything you told us true?” His voice is barely a breath. “Who you are, wanting to help us… Was your concern genuine at all?”
