“They looked like symbols. Or letters.” She waves a hand. “No idea. I’m not into occult mumbo-jumbo.”

I want to grab her and shake her. “Did anyone take notes?”

“Notes? Not likely.” She snickers. “Sometimes I’m not sure my girls even know how to write.”

“Certainly brag-worthy,” I mutter, put out.

“But I think one of them took a picture.”

Nowshe tells me. I perk up. “Can I see it?”

“Hm.” She gives me a once-over as if my appearance has anything to do with my request. Then she lifts a hand and waves it. I guess it’s a sort of beacon thing rather than beckoning? “Estella! Come here. Got your phone with you?”

A girl dressed in the same barely-there uniform, her long ponytail chestnut instead of blond, approaches us. With a small huff, she produces a phone from—her panties?Uh…“What do you want it for?

“The picture you took of Aurora. Ophelia. Whatever name that bitch goes by now. Still got it?”

“Sure.”

“Find it.”

Obediently, the girl flicks through the pictures. “Here.”

“If I let you copy this,” Zoey says, glaring at me, “you’ll owe me a favor.”

“Christ. Can’t you do a good deed for free once in your life?”

She taps her foot and finally gives a dramatic sigh. “Just… hurry up. And if you ever find out what happened that night, I expect you to tell me.”

I don’t have a phone but I copy the symbols in my notebook, since I possess the uncool skill of writing. I don’t recognize them. Then again, I never learned the language of magic—and wasn’t elemental magic supposed to be done without specific spells? Was Ophelia using demonblood somehow?

Or did someone else cast a spell on her that night? What was she doing under a tree? And if it was demonblood magic, why did it look like the four elements had been involved?

I’ll ask Ashton about the symbols. And if he doesn’t know, I’ll confront her, show her the symbols, ask her to her face.

I walk away from Zoey and the cheerleading squad, heading vaguely in the direction of the boys. I see Jason among them, his gaze following me as I exit the field.

Now… where is Ashton? It’s time to get to the bottom of this strange story and find out the truth.

“She said that? Are you serious?” Ashton stares at me. “They found Ophelia with these symbols around her?”

“Yes.”

He frowns. “What does it mean?”

“This is what I want to know.” I’ve found Ashton by the lake, after asking several vampires who alternated between glaring at me and licking their lips like dogs looking for a meal. “Can’t you look it up?”

“I can’t right now,” he says.

“Why not? What are you doing out here?”

“I’m waiting for Sindri.”

I stare at him. “Now? Here? What for?”
